England’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler will miss the three consecutive T20 series against Australia due to a calf injury and will lead the team in Phil Salt’s absence.
Buttler, 33, has suffered a setback in his recovery from an injury that kept him out of The Hundred, with his last appearance coming in the T20 World Cup semi-final loss to India in Guyana on June 27.
His participation in the five one-day international matches against Australia following the T20 is also doubtful.

Surrey all-rounder Jamie Overton was called up to the T20 squad and Essex batsman Jordan Cox, who was already in the T20 squad, was added to the ODI group as cover.
Salt and Cox are candidates to keep the wickets for the T20 series in Buttler’s absence, but England also have the option of handing over the gloves to Jamie Smith for the ODI series if the Test wicketkeeper links up with the team.

England boss Luke Wright and interim white-ball head coach Marcus Trescothick have already hinted that Butler could play as a specialist batsman in the future.
Buttler led England to victory in the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, but presided over a disastrous first-round exit at the 2024 50-over World Cup in India and finished in the last four of this summer’s T20 tournament in the Caribbean. I was defeated.
White-ball head coach Matthew Mott will step down after the T20 World Cup, and England announced on Tuesday that Test coach Brendon McCullum will hold both roles.
Michael Atherton says it will be a difficult challenge for Brendon McCullum to coach England’s Test and one-day teams despite a slight relaxation of the fixture list.
Mr Trescothick will take charge on an interim basis for the match against Australia and the tour of the West Indies later this year, while Mr McCullum’s first white-ball assignment will be the tour of India in January ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan.
