Eric Roberts has described the loss of his relationship with his daughter Emma Roberts as the hardest time of his life.
The actor and older brother of Hollywood superstar Julia Roberts, who has been estranged for some time, reflected on his lack of relationship with his eldest daughter during this week’s episode of his podcast.
Mr Roberts, 68, shares Emma with ex-partner Kelly Cunningham, but he lost custody of her when she was young and their relationship remains fractured.

Now, Roberts appeared on Michael Rosenbaum’s “Inside of You” podcast and reflected on their relationship.
The comment came after host Rosenbaum asked Roberts what was the most difficult time in his life.
“Maybe I lost my relationship with my daughter,” he said.
Asked if this was featured in his new memoir, which will be published later this year, Mr Roberts said it was, but not a big deal as the loss was “inexplicable”.

The actor described the situation as “heartbreaking.” (YouTube)
“We’re human beings, so it’s sad that we’re forever misunderstood,” Roberts said.
“And with my grandson, I started accepting that about myself.”
Roberts is grandfather to Emma’s son Rose, who will turn four in December.

He also has grandchildren from his marriage to Eliza Garrett, his wife of 32 years. Garrett had two children from a previous marriage at the time of his marriage.
He said his bond with his eldest grandson, in particular, reminded him of his memories with Emma.

“Especially the 5-year-old. She was new to me and she was a girl, so she was very vulnerable towards me, but by the time she was 2 or 2-1/2 years old, she started to like me in a very strong way. “…and we’re all very close,” he said.
“And she also looks like Emma and has the same color. So that might be the most painful for me personally because it reminds me of what we didn’t have.”
During the podcast, Roberts also opened up about her previous struggles with anxiety and depression.

Julia Roberts’ decision to side with Cunningham over her brother caused a rift between the two, but the two later reconciled.
Mr Roberts will reveal his relationship with the sisters and his estranged daughter in his memoir, due to be published in December.
