James L. Brooks, the Oscar-winning author-director for Broadcast News, is as good as it gets, and the terms of affection have returned to the back of the camera for his first feature in over a decade.
The first trailer arrived for Ella McKay, a star-studded new comedy led by Emma Mackey (and yes, the sex education star’s name is really close to her character).

Eliminating father, political headaches, and well-earned screams
Ella’s career has progressed, but her personal life continues to pull her to the side. Enter her estranged Father Eddie (Woody Harrelson). Jamie Lee Curtis plays Helen, Ella’s aunt and confidant. Ella gives advice.
Best known as the voice of the Simpsons Marge, Julie Kabner is on board as a narrator and longtime aide to Ella. “I’m not exactly neutral because I’ve been working for her since she graduated from law school,” she admits. “I’m obsessed with her,” for Simpsons fans, listening to Marge telling political comedy is a fun little crossover moment.
An ensemble with familiar faces
Alongside Mackie, Harrelson, Curtis and Kabuner, the film features Jack Roden, Kumile Nanziani, Ayo Edebili, Rebecca Hall, Spike Fian, Becky Anne Baker, Albert Brooks and Joey Brooks.
James L. Brooks is also produced by Richard Sakai, Julie Ansel and Jennifer Brooks.
Mackey, Curtis’ Brooks and back as director
In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Brooks said Mackey stands out later in the audition process. “She played brilliantly (in sex education) at 16. She plays a variety of ages in this film. She’s worth noting.” He compares her to classic stars like Catherine Hepburn and Rosalind Russell, saying, “There’s some sort of great movie star we had, and Emma has a lot of the same qualities.”
As for Curtis, Brooks praised her presence on set.
Release date
Ella McKay will open at Australian cinemas on December 11th and at US cinemas on December 12th.
