It’s official: Eldenling is becoming a live-action film! Game publisher Bandai Namco and indie entertainment company A24 tapped Machina, Civil War and Annihilation Director Alex Garland to write and direct adaptations.
The film is produced by Garland, Peter Rice, Andrew MacDonald, Aron Reich (DNA Film), Vince Geraldis and Eldenling’s lore contributor George R.R. Martin. The author of Game of Thrones helped to form the game’s mythical foundations and created the backstory and World Building at the request of director Miyazaki.
It’s still the early days of the project, so I’m not going to continue at all. Do you want to plot details? Not yet known. casting? Mystery. However, given Garland’s brain horror and talent for visually impressive chaos, we can assume that we are probably not seeking a light fantasy riot.
Released in 2022, Elden Ring took the punishing gameplay of FromSoftware’s Dark Souls series, which opened and blowed it up, dropping players into the vast, corrupt fantasy realm known as The Lands. The story was partially built by Martin – centers around a “discolored” warrior who claims power from the obscurity of the world defined by corruption, madness and doom. Something that you know feels good.
The lore is well known for its deep running, the boss is grotesque and the storytelling is enigmatic. Fans have pieced together much of the story through item descriptions and ambiguous NPC dialogue. In other words, it’s not your typical film blueprint. But for a manager like Garland, this could be the perfect challenge.
As the world of Eldenling Games continues to expand, film announcements arrive. The multiplayer spinoff Nightreign lands on May 30th, with Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition hitting Nintendo Switch 2 later this year. All of these add to 303 million copies of the original game that has been shipped since 2022, as well as the critically acclaimed copy of Erdtree’s DLC Shadow, released last year.
Whether the film chooses to adapt the main quest line – whether to complete the battle of demigods, the mysterious maiden, the monster’s golden tree, or pave its own path into mythology, the world is certainly rich enough to support it. There is no release date, no casting, no plot details. It’s just a world waiting for a massive, lore-along world to come back to life, a mountain of fan expectations, and an extremely profitable opportunity to get it right. stay tuned!
