Disney has dropped the official trailer for Zootopia 2, a studio follow-up to the 2016 CG animation hit.
The first film was a genuine success, winning over US$1 billion at the global box office (from its reported budget of $150 million), and earning an Academy Award for Best Animation Features. Almost ten years later, Judy Hoppes and Nick Wilde are back. Their partnership is not exactly running smoothly.
Check out the trailer above and see more details about the sequel below.
Counseling sessions, Slither suspects, and tense teamwork
Zootopia 2 sees Judy (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick (Jason Bateman) perform rough patches in the post-case glory era. Ordering from the “partner in crisis” counseling program by Chief Bogo (Idris Elba) they find Kinttablanson sitting across from Dr. Fazby, a Zen-like cookie therapist whom he has been called out to. It won’t take long for Judy’s intense enthusiasm and Nick’s evasive irony to be summoned.
But their emotional baggage has to take the back seat as new mystery slinks into town. The first reptile of age has arrived at Gary Desnake: Gary Desnake, the poisonous pit viper voiced by Oscar winner Ke Hui Quan. He claims to be helping his family, but his presence causes the city to be confused, with Judy and Nick being tasked with finding him before the spiral.
New faces, favorites, pop bangers
The trailers include not only new characters, but also familiar ones, such as Gary, Dr. Fasby and Nibble (voiced by Fortune Famester). Hope the return of Fan Five Light’s DMV sloth, Mr Big and his shrew mafia, Pop Sensation Gazelle (voiced by Shakira).
Director and co-writer Jared Bush, who helped shape the original, returns to expand the world further. “It was an absolute joy to play with so many actors who made the first film so special,” he said in a statement. “And it’s so exciting to expand the world with our incredible new cast members. We can’t wait for our audience to see the other surprises we have in this brand new adventure.”
Zootopia 2 is scheduled to open at US cinemas on November 26th and at Australian cinemas on November 27th.
