As the much-celebrated fifth anniversary of Disco Elysium approaches, a brand new independent studio has been formed in an effort to continue the pioneering role-playing game’s legacy in developing a spiritual successor.
The studio, called Longdue, has a staff of more than a dozen people, including some who worked at ZA/UM on Disco Elysium and its ultimately canceled sequel. Industry veterans from both Bungie and Rockstar will also be on hand.
The team’s yet-to-be-named debut title draws inspiration from popular genre stalwarts like Planescape: Torment and the apparently original Disco Elysium, while also bringing new spins to the role-playing genre with new “psychogeography.” It is expected to open up new horizons. Mechanic.
In short, as the official statement says, “The lines between mind and environment blur, guiding players through an ever-evolving narrative landscape that collides, shifts, and changes with each choice.”
As previously mentioned, Disco Elysium is a highly decorated title in the CRPG space, garnering tremendous critical acclaim and firmly placing itself in the race for Game of the Year. Reviews of the “Final Cut” release gave it a score of 9.5 out of 10.
“Disco Elysium: The Final Cut is the definitive edition of an already great game.
“The film is a blend of quirky characters, thought-provoking social commentary, and surprising worlds and locations within its setting. Its central narrative may stumble at the end, but by then… Everything you experience is some of the best you can find in this type of RPG.โ
Needless to say, this spiritual successor may be years away at this point, but we’re excited to see what Longdue is capable of.
