CNN —
It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Superman’s dog!
In movie news that’s sure to have comic book fans howling with excitement, director James Gunn has confirmed that Krypto (Superman’s super pet, named after the Man of Steel’s home planet Krypton) will be released in next summer’s big budget. It was announced that it would be part of the big-budget production of “Superman.” The movie, previously titled “Superman: Legacy.” (The film is produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures and, like CNN, is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery.)
The director shared with X on Tuesday a series of visuals showing Superman next to a dog, as well as a photo of Gunn and his own pet dog.
Gunn went on to say that the film’s furry, four-legged characters were inspired by his dog Oz, whom he adopted shortly after he began writing the screenplay for Superman.
“Oz was kept in the backyard with 60 other dogs and knew nothing about humans, which was problematic to say the least,” Gunn said in a social media post. I wrote. “He came right away and destroyed our house, our shoes, our furniture, and even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he let us touch him.”
He added that the thought came to mind: “If Ozu had superpowers, how difficult would life be?” This provided Krypto’s entry point into the script. He wrote that Crypto “changed the shape of storytelling in the same way that Ozu changed my life.”
Gunn added that his post was timed to coincide with Shelter Dog Adoption Month, which occurs every October.
“Superman” will star “Pearl” actor David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” star Rachel Brosnahan will play Lois Lane. Nicholas Hoult plays Lex Luthor. “Superman” is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
