Warner Bros. has released a teaser announcing the title of the upcoming Tom Cruise movie, Digger, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu (Birdman, The Revenant). It’s short, deliberately understated, and very charming. Watch the teaser above and read what we know so far.
Teasers basically set the tone and don’t explain the story. It offers little in terms of plot, leaning instead towards a slightly off-kilter atmosphere. Cruise appears mostly in silhouette as Digger Rockwell in several quick, playful images, including a beat waving a shovel and dancing with a shovel along a boardwalk. There’s also a faint echo here of Cruise’s scene-stealing turn as Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder, another rare moment where he disappeared into a prosthetic leg, leaning into physical comedy and unafraid to look a little silly on screen.
plot
There isn’t much information on plot details, but what we do know is enough to pique our curiosity. Warner Bros. describes the film as a “comedy of devastating proportions,” and the logline reads:
The most powerful man in the world embarks on a desperate mission to prove himself the savior of humanity before the disaster he causes destroys everything.
Powerful creative team and cast
It also features a strong cast, including Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, and Emma Darcy.
In addition, director Iñárritu reunites with three-time Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, who has delivered stunning visuals on films such as The Revenant, Birdman, Gravity, The Tree of Life and Children of Men.
Iñárritu, who will also produce the film alongside Cruise, co-wrote the screenplay with Birdman co-creators Nicolas Jacobone, Alexander Dinelaris, and Sabina Berman.
Iñárritu’s ‘scary’ project
This is Iñárritu’s first English-language feature since The Revenant, and his first collaboration with Cruise. On paper, this is an unexpected combination. Cruise, a modern-day studio blockbuster engine, is teaming up with a filmmaker known for intense, artistic drama.
Speaking at Cannes earlier this year (quoted by The Hollywood Reporter), director Iñárritu described the film as a “brutal, wild comedy of devastating proportions,” adding: “It’s insane. It’s scary and funny and beautiful. I know comedy isn’t what people expect from me or Tom, but it was scary for me to make this movie.”
He went on to explain that this challenge is part of the appeal. “I don’t like repeating myself. Every movie is supposed to scare you a little bit,” he said, noting that he considers Birdman a “dark comedy” and that Digger presents a similar creative challenge. Iñárritu added of Cruise, “Tom makes me laugh every day. He has total dedication and complete insanity.”
It will be interesting to see what they have in store.
release date
Digger is scheduled to be released in Australian cinemas on October 1, 2026, and in US cinemas on October 2, 2026.
