Everyone loves an underdog who takes the spotlight from behind and lives up to his promise. This is one of the reasons why the Final Fantasy XIV reboot was so successful. The bones of a great game have always been there, and the second version was able to bring them to the fore. On the other hand, sometimes the reboot fails and the new version of the title disappears without a trace. However, in the case of New World Aeternum, the new reworked version seems to proceed in much the same way as before, at least in the case of Steam reviews.
Despite Amazon Games’ nearly limitless resources and the huge amount of new features included in the New World Aeternum reboot, this updated version just doesn’t seem to be a hit. Despite MMORPG player numbers being at an all-time high in the past year, Steam reviews remain stubbornly stubborn. In fact, it was a little off.
At the time of writing, New World Aeternum has 241,049 overall reviews, with 68% recommending this title. In recent reviews, that number has remained largely unchanged, with 1,589 players expressing their opinion on the game, of which only 65% had a positive response. So while it’s not exactly a failure as a title, given how much was invested in the reboot, one would expect the needle to shift in a better direction.
There appear to be a variety of complaints that are preventing games from improving their scores on Steam, including the perception that games are geared to favor console players. One review wrote, “I’ve played this game off and on since day one, and with the console launch they chose to update the UI for consoles, but it’s terrible for PC players.” It is written. “I really liked the game, but I’m no longer confident that it does what’s best for PC players, so I can’t recommend it,” says another.
Other players have complained about the seemingly unambitious scope of New World Aeternum’s launch. “When you launch the game, you’ll see that the UI has only been tweaked slightly and the only different content is the tutorial. They decided to completely rebrand the game in order to be able to sell it on consoles. focused and didn’t actually fix the core problems the game had for two years,” one highly rated review says. “There’s not much difference in this update other than the name,” says another.
However, it’s not all doom and gloom as some are taking the time to hype the title. “It’s fun! Stop reading this and start playing!” enthuses one player. “This game is fun, a lot of fun. I own it now on Steam and console. There’s no steep learning curve, the story is fun, and it has a Guild Wars feel. I’m having a lot of fun with it.” another participant cheered warmly.
As such, the situation with New World Aeternum is still very mixed at the moment, and while players are still rating it more positively than negatively, it feels a little underwhelming as a launch. If you’d like to make up your own mind about the title, head over to Steam for more information.
