Virgin River has become one of Netflix’s longest-running shows. And in this day and age, it’s pretty quick for Netflix to cancel a popular series after just one season, so that’s quite an accomplishment.
Thanks to early renewals, the show joins the likes of Orange Is the New Black and Grace and Frankie, both of which ran for seven seasons.
Based on Robin Carr’s novel series of the same name, the drama follows Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge), a midwife and nurse who moves from Los Angeles to the eponymous Northern California town for work. I will follow. The move is the perfect opportunity for her to make some painful memories, but Mel soon realizes that life in a small town isn’t as simple as she thought – with ex-Marine Jack (Martin Henderson). An all-consuming romance begins.
The show currently boasts an impressive 81% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
“I think we’re just starting to see Mel and Jack function as a couple, and we’re really excited about it,” said showrunner Patrick Sean Smith. Season 7 will “explore their honeymoon phase as they build a life on the farm, which can come with its own set of obstacles.”
So it’s pretty safe to assume that Netflix will deliver on its Virgin River Season 7 promise. That said, there have been several instances in the past where sequels to certain shows were greenlit but never actually made. . In October 2020, more than a year after it was renewed, Netflix announced that Season 4 of GLOW had been canceled due to the coronavirus shutdown. Similarly, Ratched, the prequel to One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, was originally scheduled to be ordered for two seasons, but only one season was ultimately available.
