Daredevil doesn’t seem to be the only defender who will make a comeback in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (emphasis).
Born nearing Daredevil: Disney+ Premiere after seeing Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdoch get solidly active, Marvel Studios is focusing on other Marvel characters that once were on Netflix.
Bloodwinderbaum, head of streaming, television and animation, confirmed that the studio is “very exploring” the revival of Kristen Ritter’s Jessica Jones, Mike Colter’s Luke Cage and Finn Jones’ Iron Fist I did.
“I can’t say much about it, but I say it’s really exciting to be able to play in that sandbox,” Winderbaum said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “Obviously, there are no unlimited storytelling resources like comic books. If you can draw, you can do that. Actors and time and large-scale productions, especially to build a film universe on television. It deals with scale. But I can say I took all these variables into consideration. It’s certainly creatively very exciting and something we are very exploring .”
Netflix-Marvel era
Before Marvel Studios integrated its television projects under Disney+, Netflix-Marvel Partnership created a slate of interconnected shows. It started with Daredevil (2015-2018). This introduced Cox’s blind lawyer, vigilante night. Jessica Jones (2015-2019), Luke Cage (2016-2018) and Iron Fist (2017-2018) followed, culminating in The Defenders (2017), a crossover miniseries that brings together all four street-level heroes. I did. Jon Bernthal’s The Punisher (2017-2019) was also part of the lineup.
Despite building a dedicated fanbase, Netflix-Marvel shows were systematically cancelled between 2018 and 2019. The licensing agreement prevented Marvel from using Netflix characters elsewhere, leading to a long gap before Cox returned in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Kristen Ritter wants
Marvel has yet to confirm official plans, but at least one former defender is ready to go back. Winderbaum was asked about the defender character he would like to see in the MCU in November 2024. His response: “Ah, amazing. I mean, Jessica Jones.”
Ritter responded in December 2024: “Did Brad Winderbaum say that? It’s really exciting to hear. Isn’t that the guy who makes the phone call? Come on, Brad! Let’s move on with that. Let’s do it. We’re ready.”
The waiting game
Matt Murdoch is back in Daredevil: Reborn is a series that also revamps his role as Frank Castle/Punisher, so at least some MCU street-level heroes are slowly reconstructed. I’m doing it. We’ll still see if Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist will continue, but Winderbaum’s comments give fans hope. I understand.
