DC Comics

DC Studios is trapped in the director of upcoming Clayface films and tap on British filmmaker James Watkins (Speak No Evil) to bring the story of the Batman villain alive. Known for his work in the horror genre, Watkins directs him from the unforgettable script of Dr. Sleep and Hill House creator Mike Flanagan.

A dark take on Batman’s villain

Clayface explores the origins of the honorable character. This is a man deeply rooted in the legacy of DC’s twisted and tragic villain. Multiple versions of Clayface have appeared in comics since the character’s introduction in 1940, but this repetition focuses on B-movie actors who are struggling to undergo dramatic transformations after injecting mystical substances. It’s said. At a terrible cost.

With a budget of around $40 million, the film is positioned as a terrifying entry in the slate of DC’s growing diverse projects, and the gap between major superhero blockbusters and more character-driven stories It’s filling in. Production is expected to begin later this year, with the film scheduled for release in the US on September 11th, 2026.

Watkins Horror Qualification

Watkins has built a reputation for creating grounded, unstable thrillers. His directorial debut, Eden Lake, is one of the most intense survival horror films of the 2000s, and the black women adaptation featuring Daniel Radcliffe, is a box office gross. Proven (an budget of an estimated $15 to $100 million to almost $130 million – 20 million). Most recently he directed the director, a psychological horror film starring James McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis and Scoot McNairy.

New corner of the DC Universe

As first reported by Hollywood Reporter, DC Studios co-president James Gunn met with Watkins for the final presentation before giving the director an official nod. The film will be produced by Batman director Matt Reeves, along with Lynn Harris, Peter Saffron and Gunn himself. There’s nothing about the cast yet, but Gunn and Safran have previously said that the actors from DC’s Animation Project will also play the characters in live action.

Clayface has been a staple in Batman’s Rogue gallery for decades, with previous portrayals including Batman’s Ron Perlman: Animated Series, Harley Quinn’s Alan Tadik, and live-action versions of Gotham and Pennyworth.
