The official trailer for We Bury the Dead has arrived, further showcasing Zach Hilditch’s terrifying Tasmanian-set zombie nightmare and what may be one of Daisy Ridley’s most intense turns yet.
Eva’s search turns into a fight for survival
Set after a devastating military experiment, the film follows Eva (Ridley), a woman who joins a body recovery unit in devastated Tasmania, holding out hope that her missing husband may be among the dead. What begins as a strict and methodical mission quickly changes when the corpses begin to show signs of life. First subtle, then unmistakable, and finally violent.
The trailer outlines the emotional stakes without wasting any time. “I understand what you’re going through,” Eva is warned early on, “but if you find a husband…I hope you understand what that means.”
In the early stages of the outbreak, it appears that the undead are not completely bloodthirsty killing machines. “The strange people who come back online are docile,” the soldier reassures. “You have nothing to fear.” Well, that’s a line that the footage quickly ruins. As another character bluntly puts it, “They’re getting more hostile by the day.”
cast and creative team
In addition to Ridley, the film also stars Brenton Thwaites (Titans) and Mark Coles-Smith (Mystery Road: Origins), and the trailer shows them both navigating the escalating chaos.
The film will be Hilditch’s most ambitious project to date, following the Stephen King adaptation 1922 and the apocalyptic drama These Last Hours. “This was a true labor of love from everyone involved,” the filmmakers said in a statement, “and we’re thrilled to finally be able to bring it to audiences in all its glory on the big screen in February.”
The Australian/American co-production is produced by Penguin Empire’s Kelvin Munro and Grant Sputore, with Ross Dinerstein (Campfire Studios), Joshua Harris and Mark Fasano (Gramercy Park) also serving as executive producers from Giant Leap Media and Umbrella.
Powerful early information and release date
The film had its international premiere at SXSW Austin and received promising reviews on the festival circuit. As of this writing, the film has a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.
We Bury the Dead will be released in US cinemas on January 2nd (via Vertical) and in Australian and New Zealand cinemas on February 5th, 2026 (via Umbrella).
