Cameron Diaz may be ready to dust off her nightclub singer heels and return to the funny world of masks.
While promoting her first film in 10 years, the Netflix action comedy Back in Action, she revealed her desire to reprise her role as Tina Carlyle. But she has one condition. That’s something we definitely agree with. That means Jim Carrey has to be in it.
“The fact that Jim’s on board means he’s been on board since day one,” Diaz said in an interview with Access Hollywood, laughing, referring to her breakout role alongside Carrey.
In the 1994 film, Carrey played Stanley Ipkiss, a timid bank teller who discovers a magical mask that unleashes his eccentric trickster alter ego. Diaz auditioned at age 21 and landed the role of jazz singer Tina Carlyle thanks to a recommendation from a modeling agent. Diaz, who had no acting experience, began taking acting lessons after securing the role.
Carrey also hinted at the possibility of revisiting the green-faced mess. “Oh, it must be the right idea. If somebody has the right idea, I think so,” the actor said in a December 2024 interview with ComicBook.com. “It’s not really about money. I joke about money. (…) I can’t be clear about these things. I said I wanted to retire, but I thought I was talking more about power rest. Because as soon as you have a good idea or a group of people that you really enjoy working with, things change.”
Diaz has also floated the idea of reuniting the gang for another Charlie’s Angels movie. In an interview with Access Hollywood, Diaz was asked about the possibility of reuniting with Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu in a Charlie’s Angels movie. “That’s great,” she said, and her “Back in Action” co-star Jamie Foxx chimed in, suggesting she be the main character. “That’s insane. I’d throw my hat in the ring…” Diaz finished with his thoughts: (…) Send a message now to (Lucy Liu) and promote her Jamie as Bossley. ”
In a world of sequels and reboots, never say “never.”
