Cameron Diaz plans to team up with Stephen Merchant for a new romantic comedy in an upcoming project for Amazon MGM Studios, which Merchant will star in and direct.
The as-yet-untitled film is about a workaholic Englishman (merchant) working at a high-end New York hotel who needs a wife for his looks. He makes a deal with a stand-up comedian (Diaz) who is in need of health insurance and sets up a fake marriage that begins as a deal but ends up being far less straightforward.
Deadline broke the news, reporting that Merchant will direct from a script he co-wrote with John Butler. Merchant is producing with Lee Eisenberg and Point Gray Pictures’ Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver and Josh Fagen, with Natalie Sandy serving as executive producer. The title and release date have not been decided yet.
Butler previously wrote and directed The Handsome Devil, directed Papi Chulo, and most recently produced the six-part series These Sacred Vows. He previously collaborated with Merchant on The Outlaws, making them a familiar creative duo behind the scenes.
It’s another major on-camera and behind-the-camera gig for Merchant, who co-created The Office, while Diaz continues to rack up new projects since her return to acting. The 2025 Netflix action film Back in Action was her first feature film in about 11 years.
