Brie Larson | JJ Abrams
Brie Larson is stepping into a world of creature terror. Oscar-winning Captain Marvel Star has signed on to lead Fail-Safe, a new feature that will collaborate with producer JJ Abrams and director Strange Darling JT Molner.
No one will save you filmmaker Brian Duffield. Fail Safe is based on a short story by author Philip Fracassi. The story is an unsettling domestic horror story told through the eyes of a boy who begins to uncover a horrifying secret about his mother’s true nature. If you want to read the story in full, we’ve got you – here. This adaptation is described as a contemporary take on the creature horror genre. It combines emotional intimacy with an escalation of fear.
Producing through his bad robot banner, JJ Abrams appreciated the project. “Failsafe, Briandafield wrote an absolute powerhouse in the script. It’s as sweet and moving as it’s scary. An unusual horror film that makes you laugh, feel, or care about you before you take it to an absolutely wild ride.”
Producer Drew Simon added to Infrared’s production president (the label of Film Nation, which supports the film),: “I’m not excited to see Brie take on this role, it’s scary, emotionally recharged, unlike anything she’s done before.
Executive producer Larson has spent several busy years with projects like Marvel, High Speed X and Chemistry lessons. Failsafe marks a significant shift towards the horror realm that is more grounded for actors.
The film is produced by Abrams, Drew Simon, John Cohen and Jack Heller, and is executive produced by Caitlin de Risser Ellen and Duffield along with Larson. Infrared is fundraising, but Film Nation handles international sales. CAA Media Finance and WME Independent are jointly amending domestic rights. The famous project has been introduced in the Cannes market.
