‘Black Phone 2’ Trailer: Ethan Hawk returns with a chilled horror sequel

“The Dead is Just a Word.” Universal and Blumhouse have announced the first official trailer for Black Phone 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2022 hit horror thriller. Please see the trailer above and see more details below.

Returning to the director’s chair is Dr. Scott Derrickson, the sinister and strange helmer, and Oscar-nominated Ethan Hawk is once again wearing a Glover cold mask. This time, we’ll be as an unfinished ghost of a business. The trailer teases darker and violent chapters built on the supernatural foundations of the first film, with Glover showing some Freddie Kruger-like abilities and focusing on the high school environment.

The grabber is not completed yet

In the first film, Mason Thames’ Finney escapes Glover’s clutch thanks to help from the spirit of his previous victim. However, the nightmare isn’t over in the sequel. The trailer reveals that Finney is still haunted – literally – when Glover’s voice returns with a calm reminder, “All people you should know that the dead are a word.”

This time, the threat extends to Finney’s sister, Gwen (Madeleine McGraw), as Glover’s ghost seeks revenge from beyond.

A cold world with a villain ghost

“The first movie was a ghost movie, but all ghosts were victims and a typical ghost story,” Derrickson told the Hollywood Reporter. “But this has a ghost who is the villain.”

Derrickson portrayed his high school experiences attending the Rockies winter camp for a new environment. “Middle school horror films are different animals than high school horror films,” he explained. “That’s why there’s a ratchet of strength.”

More violence. More fear. And deeper diving.

The first film leaned against a spooky suspense with supernatural elements, but Black Phone 2 appears to drive fear and genocide to more visceral levels.

“It’s certainly violent, scary, more graphic,” Derrickson said. “And part of that is because of the age of the kids.”

The return cast includes Jeremy Davis as his troubled father, Finney and Gwen, along with new cast members Demian Vicil, Ariana Rivas, Miguel Mora, Maev Beatty and Graham Abbey.

Written by Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill and based on the characters created by Joe Hill (Son of Stephen King), the film is produced by Jason Blum, Derrickson and Cargill.

The Black Phone 2 will open in Australian cinemas on October 16th and in US films on October 17th.
