Binge is set to return to Wentworth Prison as the Foxtel-owned streamer commissions a new chapter in the prison drama.

The announcement was made at last Friday’s AACTA Awards, where Daniel Cormack, who played Bea Smith in the Fremantle series, introduced a segment celebrating Wentworth’s achievements and hinted at what’s to come.

First released in 2013, the film is a reinterpretation of director Reg Watson’s long-running ’80s drama The Prisoner, and has been shown in more than 170 territories around the world, including the UK, France, Denmark, Canada, Israel, Finland, Japan and the United States, and ranked among the top 10 most-watched series on Netflix.

In addition to Cormac, the cast also includes Nicole da Silva, Pamela Rabe, Celia Ireland, Katrina Milosevic, Kate Atkinson, Robbie Magasiva, Chris McQuade, Sharina Clanton, Tammy Mackintosh, Leah Purcell, Sigrid Thornton, Kate Jenkinson, Jacqueline Brennan, Bernard Curry, Lariwi Hick, Susie Porter and Zoe. Terakes, Kate Box, Jane Hall, Vivian Awosoga, Marta Dusseldorp. The series lasted for eight seasons before ending in 2021.

The next chapter, currently in development, will continue the program’s tradition by taking the story beyond the walls of prison and into the unpredictable realities of life on parole, offering a depiction of “survival, resilience and hope, even against the odds,” Binge said.

“We’re incredibly proud of Wentworth’s legacy and excited to reveal what we’re creating with this bold new chapter,” said Lana Greenhalgh, director of original writing at Foxtel Group.

“The next version opens the door to a new era of formidable and engaging characters, driven by fresh and provocative storylines, while honoring everything fans have loved about the world. This project is in an exciting stage of development, and we look forward to sharing more details soon.”
