YouTube today detailed some big changes coming to Shorts, many of which have been requested for years.
The biggest thing is that starting October 15th, creators will be able to upload shorts up to 3 minutes long. Previously, it was limited to 60 seconds, and anything longer than that would be uploaded as a regular video.
This also comes with a more streamlined video viewing experience, with some text appearing off-screen, as shown below.

Want to watch your favorite short story? Now you can easily recreate the magic with templates. Jump on the latest trends, sync your clips to the hottest sounds, and add your own flair. Tap (Remix) on an inspired short video to try out a template, then select (Use this template) to put your own spin on it.
Unleash the power of YouTube with short videos. In the coming months, we’ll bring the vast world of YouTube content directly to your Shorts camera, making it easy to remix your favorite videos, music videos, and other clips. You can also extract from multiple clips across YouTube.
A few weeks ago, we told you that Veo, Google DeepMind’s most capable video generation model, was coming to YouTube Shorts. Creators will now be able to bring their ideas to life with even more amazing video backgrounds and standalone video clips, making short videos even more dreamy later this year.

We also want you to be able to customize your YouTube experience based on your preferences, so we’re introducing a “Show fewer short videos” option. Click the more menu in the top right corner of the Shorts grid in your Home Feed and select this setting to temporarily reduce the number of Shorts you see in your Home Feed.
