Netflix has released the official trailer for Being Eddie, an Eddie Murphy documentary that looks back on 50 years of work and the future of his career. Watch the trailer above and read the gist.
The film traces Murphy’s journey from teenage comic book to Saturday Night Live breakout through stand-up films and a string of box office hits, a journey Murphy reflects on in his own words and at home. Featuring friends, collaborators, and fellow comics, including Arsenio Hall, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Jamie Foxx, Jerry Seinfeld, Kevin Hart, Pete Davidson, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Tracy Morgan. Rock calls Murphy “one of the greatest people of all time.” “He changed the way we looked at comedy,” Fox said. “He amplified black talent,” Hart added. Their contributions span chapters from Raw to Beverly Hills Cop, Coming to America, Trading Places, The Nutty Professor, the Shrek movies, and Dreamgirls.
“There’s no one else like him. There’s no one else,” director Angus Wall, the two-time Oscar-winning editor (The Social Network, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), who makes his directorial debut with the film, told Netflix’s Tudom. “He’s been famous longer than anyone alive, and he’s never lost sight of who he is. He lived through it all with grace. How did he do it? What led him? We’re following all these questions with him.”
Wall added: “There’s a great clip of Eddie on a talk show early in his career talking about how he was always able to do impersonations and do different voices. He talks about how his mother used to ask him, ‘Who is Eddie? What’s Eddie’s voice?'” The film answers that question. Although Eddie has played a variety of characters over the past 40 years, he had never played himself on screen before. I think people will really enjoy spending time with him because he opens up his world and his heart. ”
Being Eddie will premiere on Netflix on November 12th.
