Peter Weir, the Australian director and screenwriter known for “The Truman Show” and “Picnic at Hanging Rock,” will receive a lifetime achievement award at the 2024 Venice Film Festival.
The film festival announced on Thursday, local time, that it would award Weir a lifetime achievement award, the Golden Lion, in recognition of his role as one of the “great directors of modern cinema.”
Weir was a mainstay of Australian cinema in the 1970s with his cult classics Picnic at Hanging Rock and The Car That Ate Paris.
His domestic success followed Gallipoli and The Year of Living Dangerously, which, as festival director Alberto Barbera noted, opened “the doors of Hollywood to him.” Ta.

“In his films, Weir combines reflection on personal themes with a need to appeal to as wide an audience as possible,” Barbera said.
“Weir has strengthened his role in the Hollywood establishment while distancing himself from the American film industry, celebrating his sense of storytelling and innate romanticism.”
In 1986, Weir made his first foray into Hollywood with The Witness, which won Best Original Screenplay and Best Editing, as well as an Oscar for Best Director.
Weir will receive an honorary Oscar in 2022.

Weir said in a statement that the award is “quite an honor.”
“The Venice Film Festival and the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement are part of the heritage of our craft,” he said.
In 1982, Weir was awarded the Order of Australia for services to the film industry.
The Venice Film Festival will be held from August 28th to September 7th.
