Australia has introduced new classification rules for games that feature in-app purchases “with an element of chance” or “simulated gambling” content.
As reported by Vooks, the new “mandatory classification” for games in Australia will come into effect from Sunday 22 September 2024.
Games with in-game purchases involving chance are rated at least M and restricted to players under 15 years of age.
Also, games that include interactive simulation gambling are automatically given an R18+ rating. This could include games that allow players to interact with casino slot machines, even if no real money is involved.
This rule excludes non-interactive gambling elements.
New classification rules
Games with chance-based mechanics or rewards (where real-world currency cannot be used to earn these rewards) are not subject to the new classification rules.
Similarly, games that feature casino settings, imagery, or themes that do not allow players to participate in interactive gambling activities are also excluded from these changes.
The new classification rules only apply to games classified after September 22, 2024. Existing games do not need to be reclassified unless they are canceled or changed.
