Well, this is a pleasant surprise. In my original review of Arizona Sunshine’s Quest, released four years ago, I called it the elder statesman of VR; Eight years later, it’s been remade for better hardware with its own sequel, a much prettier engine. Has it aged like a fine chateau wine, or is the now limping and stumbling Biden unable to endure another four years?
Freddie, have a great time
Arizona Sunshine is a great game and I revisit it from time to time. You can enjoy it in 10-minute increments, solo or co-op, or as more satisfying longer sessions, and the core conceit of shooting down zombies is still genuinely satisfying. Honestly, so many shooters have been released in VR since AS, but few still nail the sense of satisfaction and fulfillment that Arizona Sunshine provides. But it was never pretty or sophisticated. I was relieved when Arizona Sunshine 2 came out and smoothed out many of those rough edges while significantly enhancing everything that made the first game so enjoyable to play.
Remaking the original using later technology is a pretty cool idea, and I’m very happy to report that Arizona Sunshine Remake lives up to its promise. This includes all the DLC from the original release, which has also been remastered, making it very cost-effective. If you already have the original in your Quest library, there are even more nifty discounts available. Before we get into the specifics, if you played and loved the original version and are looking for a shiny new version to show off your Quest 3 or 3S, then go for it. You won’t be disappointed. But wait – hey – I’m not done yet… oh, you’re sad. In our rush to go spend our money, we end up overlooking exemplary video game reviews and writing. It’s your loss. Are the rest of you still with me? Now, let’s get down to business.
fred dead redemption
Whether you’re a seasoned player or new to Arizona Sunshine, you’ll love it. Even though the zombie theme has been killed off, resurrected, and headshotted countless times over the past 30 years, the setting still feels fresh and original. Even Resident Evil, which is all to blame, has been trying to distance itself from zombies for at least 15 years. But zombies offer a wonderfully guilt-free way to virtually live out the fantasies we all have of using gardening equipment and automatic weapons to vent our frustrations and loneliness on the masses.
In Arizona Sunshine Remake, players are cast as an unnamed, initially slightly unpleasant man surviving alone in the Arizona wilderness after the zombie apocalypse. He was trying to find a living soul to team up with and was alone for quite some time when the player Quantum popped into his head. He sounds like a bassist, roadie, or general stoner. In fact, while playing the remake, I realized that the image I had of him in my head was Neil Fack from The Bear dropped into a zombie survival scenario. This is good. His journey over the course of the game is short, but wonderfully captivating. As I mentioned in my first review, Sky Soleil’s great performance is the key to making the whole thing work. Most of the main character’s narration in VR is jagged or off-key, making it a pain to literally take up residence inside the main character’s head as the game progresses, but here, the main character’s narration is jagged or off-key, making it a pain to literally take up residence inside the main character’s head as the game progresses. Completely obsessed with getting him places and keeping him alive. Those who have only experienced him in Arizona Sunshine 2 will be even more excited to see him get to the point where he becomes obsessed with keeping the dog alive when the sequel hits fans. Sho. There’s no big story here, so the story sells through empathy for a singular character, which has stood the test of time well.
deadman, fredman
The game offers great options to customize the feel of the game, from moving and rotating to the original’s simple reload or the new VR standard toggle of sliding into a clip to cock the gun. . Thankfully, I can now hold the pistol with both hands. You can adjust where the holster and ammunition are placed on your body. It’s all good to see an improved Half-Life Alyx-style wrist inventory and the inclusion of super fun bludgeoning melee weapons like crowbars, picks, and hammers. These can be balanced on railings or the sides of tables or shelves while reloading or scavenging, which feels really cool.

The level of challenge is pretty good – even the easier difficulties are fine as long as you shoot reasonably and fast enough. The game has two paces. You scavenge and explore for ammo, pop your head out as you move, and then plunge into a horde rush of set pieces that will leave you stocking up on enough bullets and hoping you’ve picked the right weapon to survive. As with the sequel, these horde rushes can be a suffocating, frustrating and progress-blocking stressor, or they can be an exhilarating and rewarding test of endurance, and when you get through it It brings a great sense of relief and accomplishment. If this is your first rodeo, we recommend playing on a lower difficulty level first. This way, you’ll get a rough idea of what’s going to happen, and then it’s a good idea to do another playthrough where you’ll have to save more on ammo and be inventive with the weapons on offer. Weapons at your disposal. You don’t have to worry about finding crafting materials like in the sequel, but even if you’re not a fan of spraying and praying, supplies will be pretty scarce.
This changes again when playing co-op with a friend. This is a great feature of both the original game and its newly reborn Arizona Sunshine remake. Unfortunately, the same limitations apply. This is one thing I really wanted to see improved in the new gameplay. There are points where it seems like one of the players is automatically running around in the horde while the other is watching, but that’s often not the case. When a player triggers a horde, their co-op partner will be teleported to their side if they are in a location the game doesn’t want them to be. In some cases, invisible walls prevent players from following visible paths, and the game locks areas of the map that should be accessible simply because the designers wanted it that way. It may happen. It’s pretty lazy and annoying and was weak 8 years ago. It’s simply inexcusable that such a classy game, after eight years of repetition, continues to repeat its mistakes word for word and with such a lack of grace in its execution.
long and wasted years
While we’re talking about things in the original game that really should have been scrapped or remained scrapped, let’s talk graphics. As you might expect, the graphics in Arizona Sunshine Remake are generally a huge improvement over the original. Thankfully, the original bacon wood texture is long gone, but some items of text are still unacceptably pixelated and awful. For example, the searchable trunk of a police car says “HIGHWAY PATROL,” but I’ve seen better quality images of captures online trying to confirm I’m a human. . The worst part is the sniper scope section, where the graphics don’t match the original release as distant zombies are rendered in terrible quality. In fact, in this example, it doesn’t look as good as the original PlayStation. Vertigo Games has done a lot to fly the flag for VR as a gaming medium. And all eyes are on this remake to show how it’s done. Considering our ambition and overall quality of experience, we’ve slid a few things back from the original. Don’t let Ed Wood get the director’s cut version. We are currently planning to reduce the price accordingly.

The same goes for how messy things can get. Cleaning is better and drawers and doors have more physical interactivity, but picking things up can be unnecessarily finicky and sometimes even buggy. If you are carrying objects when the game loads a new area, they may disappear.
These are all things that should definitely be sorted out. Some are patchable, others are not. Let’s see what happens in the next two months. However, this is a remake of an 8-year-old game and should be much smoother. It only takes seven years to train as a doctor or an architect, so I think it’s reasonable to expect Fred to do a little better than this, dead or not.
sunshine dessert
Arizona Sunshine Remake does exactly what it promises, delivering great value, great fun, and great challenge in one juicy headshot-ready package. The atmosphere is palpable, from the setting to the impressive voice acting to the perfectly appreciated musical score. Still, it offers some of the most satisfying gunplay in Quest, can be played in bite-sized chunks, and can also be played in co-op, avoiding The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners’ time-bound issues. You get a great DLC story as part of the deal, and there’s also an infinitely replayable Horde mode that you can play with up to four friends. It’s a complete replacement for the original game, and fans of the original and sequel will have plenty of reasons to play it again, while new players will find it very appealing and highly recommended.
However, keep in mind that this is a remaster rather than a true remake, and often brings over the flaws of the original game.
