Anne Hathaway will star in a new film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s best-selling novel Verity.
She will play Verity Crawford, a famous writer who is unable to write a thriller novel after being seriously injured in a car accident. So her husband, Jeremy, offers struggling author Rowen a large sum of money to complete the remaining books in the series. Loewen accepts the job, but uncovers secrets, including an unfinished manuscript that hints at grisly confessions about Verity and her family’s past, and must determine whether Verity is a genius novelist or a psychopath. Michael Showalter, who co-starred with Hathaway in this year’s romantic comedy The Idea of You, is directing the film for Amazon MGM. The theatrical release date has not been determined. Nick Antosca wrote the screenplay after cracking the screenplay by Hilary Seitz, Angela LaManna, Will Honley & April Maguire.
Hathaway, Huber and Showalter will produce under their respective banners of Somewhere Pictures, Heartbones Entertainment and Semiformal Productions. Other producers include Antosca of Eat the Cat, Jordana Mollick of Semiformal Productions, and Stacey Sher of Shiny Penny. Lauren Levin of Heartbones Entertainment will serve as executive producer. The film falls under Semi-Formal Productions’ first-look film deal with the studio.
Verity was self-published in 2018 and became a literary sensation, spending months on the New York Times bestseller list and selling more than 1 million copies in 2023 alone. The novel has been described as “a gothic, psychosexual thriller in the vein of “Rebecca” and “Gone Girl.”
Ms. Hoover has been on Hollywood’s radar since her hit novel “It Ends With Us” set a sleeper box office success over the summer. The film, directed by Justin Baldoni and starring Blake Lively, grossed $349 million worldwide against a budget of $25 million. Director Hoover had already written the best-selling sequel, It Starts With Us, but Lively and Baldoni, who played the two main characters in the first film, didn’t get along on set, so it was difficult to make it to the big screen. is not expected.
