Andy Richter has been active in Hollywood, so it’s no surprise to hear that he rubs shoulders with many great actors. That being said, when it was revealed that The Masked Singer once shared the screen with Marlon Brando, the iconic star of The Godfather, I searched and figured out when the heck that happened. I needed to. I have to say, when I found out it was from Scary Movie 2, I had even more doubts. Fortunately, Richter was able to talk about that experience and the tremendous contract clauses that came with it.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Richter after congratulating him on his fall TV appearance on Season 12 of The Masked Singer. We talked about scary movies with Marlon Brando after a question about wrong guesses sparked a story about him running into Jay Leno at a diner. 2. Richter ultimately co-starred with James Woods in the parody opening scene of The Exorcist, but Brando was the first choice. The latter duo shot a number of scenes for the parody, which were ultimately cut when Brando withdrew from the film due to failing health.
When I asked about it, Richter admitted that the experience was as surreal as it sounded, saying:
absolutely. I couldn’t believe it. And that was one of the reasons I was excited to do[the film]. That part of the movie is only about four minutes long, but at one point it was 40 pages long. I mean, it was a lot of fun making the movie, but it was crazy. They were on a very tight schedule because the first production did so well, but they bought the next production and didn’t give[Wayans]much time. So we were doing reshoots at the end of June, and the movie’s release date was July 4th. So it was crazy.
One of Wayans’ best family films, it might have been better with Marlon Brando in it, at least that’s all I can think of. Although Brando may have been old and in poor health by that stage, he starred in The Godfather Part II, the best movie of the 70s (and perhaps the best of all time), among many other all-time classics. He is legendary for a reason. . So it would have been pretty spectacular to see him do some of the things that were written for his character in the finished Scary Movie 2.
Andy Richter shared with us one of those scenes and how it led to an outrageous and specific provision in the Scary Movie 2 contract. The actor described the scene in broad strokes, but readers can figure out what was supposed to happen between him and Marlon. Brand priest character:
At one point, there was supposed to be a simulation of an attack from the rear, for example, and my eyes blinked like a goat’s eye. So I had to go make contacts, like goat eye contacts. And my contract said something like, “I only allow myself to be depicted as being sexually assaulted by Marlon Brando.” If they remake it, whoever remakes it won’t be able to sexually assault me, the only one who can do that is Marlon Brando. โ Somehow, I lost that contract. I don’t have one. I wish I still had it because it was such a wonderful craft.
He may not be under contract, but this is a great story that connects Andy Richter with one of the greatest actors of his generation. If the upcoming Scary Movie 6 can do something as great as another legendary actor, it’s sure to be a movie that will keep audiences glued. That being said, I can see how awful it is that the phrase “Marlon Brandon hologram” exists.
If it’s any consolation for the actor, Andy Richter’s vomit-filled scene in the final cut, alongside James Woods and Natasha Lyonne, remains one of the most memorable parts of Scary Movie 2. The movie gets off to a great start with this scene. Full respect to everyone involved for enduring all of the gory content featured in this scene. I recently rewatched it using my Paramount+ subscription.
With the scene cut and the contract gone, the best-case scenario is that The Masked Singer could use it as a vague clue to the identity of Andy Richter, who was dressed as Dust Bunny on stage. That’s probably true. I’m sure I’m not the only one who learned about the strange connection between these two actors, but I’m doubly glad I asked to know the wilder story behind the experience.
The Masked Singer airs Wednesdays at 8pm ET on FOX, and as mentioned, Scary Movie 2 can be seen on Paramount+ and Pluto TV. Stick with CinemaBlend as you catch Andy Richter in one of these two, track Season 12 of TMS, and react along the way.
