Action-packed new ‘Running Man’ trailer: Glen Powell runs for his life in Edgar Wright’s Stephen King adaptation

A new action-packed trailer for “The Running Man,” based on the Stephen King novel starring “Shaun of the Dead” director Glen Powell and directed by “Baby Driver” director Edgar Wright, has been released. Watch the trailer above and read the gist.

Futuristic TV’s worst hit turns death into a scheduled viewing. Survive 30 days as a runner while professional assassins and civilians target you for your money. Ben Richards (Powell) is penniless and desperate to help his sick daughter, but he signs on with attractive producer Dan Killian (Josh Brolin). Ratings soar, rules become distorted, and the country begins to fear its decline.

What’s different this time?

Wright emphasizes the novel more than the ’87 Ernie car. “I read[the novel]when I was a teenager,” the filmmaker told fans at NYCC (as quoted by The Pop Insider). “I always felt there were parts of the story that hadn’t been adapted yet…This is not an attempt to remake that movie. This is more faithful to the original.”

OG still has its eye on it — Wright said they called Schwarzenegger to ask for permission to put it on the world’s money. He said, ‘I’m very happy about that.’ ”

Powell teased a broader, more sordid game, explaining, “Edgar decides to take this into the real world. The whole world is after this guy.” “The public can record you, they can report you, they can take you away. There’s an ever-present tension… it’s relentless.”

And yes, there’s still some Wright snap in this movie: “The tension and the comedy are kind of fused,” Powell said. “What you get is a tonal cinematic feast where you watch a man put his life in danger, but also laugh at the situation.”

cast and team

Mr. Powell will lead alongside Colman Domingo and Josh Brolin, along with William H. Macy, Lee Pace, Michael Cera, Emilia Jones, Daniel Ezra, Jamie Lawson, Sean Hayes, and Katie O’Brian.

Wright directed the film from a screenplay he wrote with Michael Bacall (their previous collaboration, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), and adapted it from Stephen King’s 1982 novel (published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman).

The film’s composer is Oscar winner Stephen Price (Gravity, At World’s End). Cinematography is by Chung Chun-hoon (Old Boy, It, Last Night in Soho). The film is edited by Wright’s longtime collaborator Paul Macris (Scott Pilgrim, The World’s End, Baby Driver, Last Night in Soho).

Wright is co-producing with Simon Kinberg and Nira Park. Executive producers include George Linder and Rachel Pryor.

release date

Running Man will be released in Australian cinemas on November 13th and in US cinemas on November 14th.
