Insidious has been bringing chilling nightmares to the screen for nearly two decades.

Created by horror veterans Leigh Whannell and James Wan, the duo behind Saw, the long-running series follows the Lambert family and paranormal investigators as they confront terrifying spirits in a limbo realm known as the Father. It depicts stepping into it. The first film was released in 2010 and starred Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne as Josh and Renai Lambert, a young couple whose son falls into a mysterious coma and is possessed by a demon.

Since then, the series has grossed more than $730 million worldwide and expanded to five films, with more on the way.

In May 2024, Deadline confirmed that an untitled sixth film is currently in production and scheduled for release in August 2025. In addition, a spin-off film titled “Threads: An Insidious Tale” starring Mandy Moore and Kumail will be released soon. Nanjiani. This offshoot marks the directorial debut of writer and producer Jeremy Slater and centers on a couple who, with the help of a spell, travel back in time to prevent the death of their daughter.

With new releases on the horizon, now is the perfect time to revisit the Insidious series, or start from scratch if you’re new to the world of Further. However, like many hit series, the Insidious universe includes sequels, prequels, and everything in between, which makes the order in which you should watch them a little confusing, to say the least.

With that in mind, here’s how to watch the Insidious movies both in release order and chronological order.

Set three years before Lambert’s ghost haunts, this prequel follows paranormal investigator Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye), who is bedridden and tormented by a dark supernatural presence after a failed attempt on Quinn Brenner. It focuses on a teenager who reluctantly agrees to help a teenager named (Stephanie Scott). To contact my deceased mother.

This also marks the beginning of Elise’s partnership with her two loyal assistants, Specs (played by Whannell) and Tucker (Angus Sampson), whom viewers have come to know and love throughout the first two films.

Another prequel, Insidious: The Last Key, expands on Elise’s backstory and jumps from 1953 to the present day in 2010, following her traumatic stay in a haunted house. Explores her childhood and the impact it had on her life and career.

Towards the end of the film, Elise receives a call from Lorraine Lambert (Barbara Hershey), Josh’s (Wilson) mother. She needs her help to confront the dark forces that are haunting her grandson. This ties the events of the first part to the original film. .

In the 2010 movie that started it all, Insidious, viewers watched as the Lambert family unwittingly became entangled with the Father as one of the sons, Dalton (Ty Simpkins), fell into a mysterious coma. is introduced in.

As it turns out, both Josh and Dalton are able to astral project their consciousness, but Dalton becomes trapped in the Father, unable to find his way back to his body. What follows is a terrifying journey as the Lambert family, with the help of Elise and her crew, confront malevolent spirits, uncover dark family secrets, and race against time to rescue Dalton.

The film ends on such a shocking note that Whannell and Wan easily decided to develop a sequel.

Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013)

Leigh Whannell, Angus Sampson Insidious – Chapter 2 – 2013

Insidious: Chapter 2 picks up where the first film left off, with the Lambert family struggling to return to normalcy after the traumatic events they endured.

They soon learn that the Father is not finished with them yet. Now, the entity known as the Bride in Black, who has tormented Josh since childhood, possesses his body and becomes determined to kill his family.

Like other Insidious movies, Chapter 2 ends on a big cliffhanger. However, this issue was not resolved as the next film released served as a prequel. Perhaps the upcoming sixth installment will return to this story and provide the answers fans have been waiting for.

Insidious: Red Door (2023)

Screen Gems Presented by Screen Gems Insidious: Red Door Ty Simpkins

After a decade away from the series, Wilson, Byrne, and Simpkins reprized their roles as Josh, Renai, and Dalton Lambert in 2023’s Insidious: Red Door, which marked Wilson’s directorial debut. .

The film is set in 2019, nine years after Josh’s tragic possession incident, and much has changed for his family. Josh and Renai are divorced, Lorraine recently passed away, and although Dalton is all grown up and in college, his relationship with Josh is now strained. Additionally, Josh and Dalton’s memories of Father have been repressed, leaving them vulnerable to the darkness that begins to surface again.

Although the film’s ending felt quite final, the post-credits scene hints that the door to The Father won’t be closed forever, with a sixth film in the works. Now, fans are wondering what new horrors are in store for the Lambert family. .
