The official trailer for “Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette” has arrived, offering a glossy, high-handed look at one of the most photographed relationships of the 1990s. Watch the trailer above, then read on to learn more about the couple’s chemistry, the media dynamics surrounding them, and how this limited series kicks off Ryan Murphy’s new love story anthology.
Romance under the flashbulb
FX’s Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette frames its central relationship as immediate and combustible, leaning into the idea that John and Carolyn’s relationship is “electric and undeniable” even though the outside noise never really abates. The trailer shows Carolyn (Sarah Pidgeon, “Tiny Beautiful Things”) building a life at Calvin Klein while being drawn into a world that treats John F. Kennedy Jr. (played by newcomer Paul Anthony Kelly) like public property. There’s one sentence in particular that hits home like a theme for the show. “There’s your world, and then there’s mine,” Carolyn clarified in another moment. “It’s not a question of whether I want to spend the rest of my life with you. It’s a question of whether I’m worthy of being Mrs. JFK Jr.”
That tug-of-war becomes even more intense when their courtship becomes tabloid oxygen. A camera waits outside the house as a stranger watches with a crane. Attention doesn’t just follow them, it actively approaches them.
When love meets the Kennedy spotlight
The series is inspired by Elizabeth Beller’s book Once Upon a Time: The Fascinating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, and trailers suggest it aims to combine private moments with very public flashpoints, such as the infamous altercation in Washington Square Park.
It also makes those around him nervous, and approaching Kennedy’s name comes with its own warnings. Naomi Watts appears as Jackie Kennedy Onassis, who warns that “there is not enough exposure in the world to prepare a woman for a wife.” Elsewhere, the voices of friends offer a frank reality check. “There are a lot of trade-offs when you’re with someone like that. The ones who shine, they belong to everyone.”
In addition to Pigeon and Kelly, the cast also includes Grace Gummer as Caroline Kennedy, Alessandro Nivola as Calvin Klein, Leila George as Kelly Klein, Sidney Lemmon as Lauren Bessette, and Constance Zimmer as Anne-Marie Messina.
Ryan Murphy’s team is behind it.
The show is created by Connor Hines (who was a writer on Netflix’s short-lived Space Force) and executive produced by Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Hines, Erik Kovtun, Nyssa Diederich, Scott Robertson, Monica Levinson, Kim Rosenstock, DV DeVincentis, and Tanase Popa. Max Winkler will executive produce and direct the pilot, and the series will be produced by 20th Television.
It’s also another big move for Murphy, whose credits include Glee, American Horror Story, American Crime Story, and Netflix’s Monsters anthology, as he launches a new anthology banner with stories that still hold a strangely modern kind of scrutiny.
