Antony Starr in “The Boys” | Prime Video
Netflix is lining up a new series set in Australia, with Antony Starr (The Boys) set to star in and executive produce The Breakers. The eight-part drama will begin filming in Western Australia, making it the first Netflix series to be filmed in the state.
An unexpected backpacking trip
Breakers follows two best friends from America who go backpacking to Australia and quickly find themselves drawn into a seemingly perfect community of surfers. Starr plays Brando, a charismatic but mysterious figure at the center of the group, whose journey takes a turn from the freedom of the open road to something much more difficult to read.

Deadline broke the news, reporting that the series comes from writer and executive producer Pete Jackson, who previously wrote Somewhere Boy and The Death of Bunny Munro.
Directed by Ng Chun Ping (Fam) and Mary Nye (Alice, Darling, Say Nothing), with Jackson serving as executive producer, Clerkenwell Films’ Gavin O’Grady (Say Nothing) Mwea Boy, This Way Up), Petra Freed (Baby Reindeer, The End of the World), and Wim de Grief (Baby Reindeer, The End of the World) will serve as executive producers.
Clerkenwell Films is producing in association with BBC Studios Productions Australia.
Big changes to Western Australia’s film industry
ScreenWest, Western Australia’s not-for-profit film funding and industry development organization, calls Breakers the largest production to be produced in the state. The agency estimates it will employ more than 100 Western Australians and inject more than $19 million into Western Australia’s economy. The announcement comes as Perth Film Studios reached substantial completion last week, with ScreenWest describing Breakers as the first of many films to be announced in 2026.
“ScreenWest is delighted to welcome Netflix to Western Australia for the first time. Breakers provides a fantastic opportunity for Western Australian division heads, staff and cast to continue to grow their careers by working on a prestigious series here in the South West. We look forward to seeing the series come to life over the coming months,” ScreenWest CEO Ricki-Lee Bestall said.
Creative Industries Minister Simone McGuirk also pointed to the scale of production and what it means for the state’s sector. “Attracting a film of this scale to Western Australia is a very exciting opportunity for the local film industry,” Mr McGuirk said. “As the largest series to be filmed in Western Australia, this project is estimated to inject more than $19 million into Western Australia’s economy and directly employ more than 100 Western Australians.”
Breakers is scheduled to finish filming in June 2026 and be released globally on Netflix.
Watch out for Anthony Starr next
The star will next be seen in Season 5 of The Boys, the final chapter of the hit Prime Video series starting in April. The actor will also play American artist and director Andy Warhol in Samo Lives, a biopic about artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Julius Onah (Captain America: A Brave New World, The Cloverfield Paradox) is directing the film, which is currently in post-production.
