‘Testament’ release date announced: What we know so far about the ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ sequel

Chase Infinity in “Testament” | Disney Plus / Hulu

Disney+/Hulu has confirmed the premiere date for the long-anticipated The Handmaid’s Tale sequel series Testament. The drama will arrive on April 8th, starting with three episodes on the first day before settling into a weekly release schedule.

If The Handmaid’s Tale exposed how Gilead has tightened its controls over the years, Testament shifts the focus to what that control means to the next generation living within it. Positioned as both a continuation and an evolution of the original series, the new chapter focuses on young people raised within the system. Here’s what we know so far ahead of release. You can also see more images of the upcoming series below.

Set several years after “The Handmaid’s Tale”

Based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name, Testament is a dramatic coming-of-age story set in Gilead, set several years after the tragic events of The Handmaid’s Tale, which ran from 2017 to 2025. Rather than revisiting familiar ground, the series expands on the world through the perspectives of two teens shaped by very different experiences.

The story follows Agnes and Daisy, young women whose lives have unfolded on opposite sides of Gilead’s borders. While Agnes grew up within the regime’s strict social order, Daisy comes as a convert from outside Gilead, bringing an outsider’s perspective to a regime that has long tolerated dissent.

Aunt Lydia’s school becomes a pressure cooker

Much of the series is set within Aunt Lydia’s elite prep school for future wives. This school is designed to instill obedience through fear, punishment, and religious justification. Although it appears sophisticated and ordered, its purpose is undeniably brutal.

The story follows Agnes and Daisy as they navigate their school’s rigid hierarchy, and how their bond turns their past, present, and future upside down. It’s a setting that suggests a more intimate, character-driven story, even as the broader mechanics of Gilead remain firmly in place.

cast

Ann Dowd (The Handmaid’s Tale) returns as Aunt Lydia, continuing one of the series’ most complex characters. Chase Infinity (One Battle After Another) plays Agnes and Lucy Halliday (Blue Jean) stars as Daisy. The cast also includes Rowan Blanchard (Snowpiercer) as Schnemite, Mattea Conforti (Power) as Becca, Mabel Lee (WandaVision) as Aunt Vdara, and Amy Seimetz (Pet Sematary) as Paula.

Additional cast members include Brad Alexander (American Last), Zarin Darnell-Martin (Ginny & Georgia), Eva Foote (Odd Squad), Isolde Ardeez (Anne), Shechina Mpumulwana (Murdoch Mysteries), Bilva Pandya (Star Trek: Discovery), and Kira Groen (Mary Kills People).

Creative team and familiar mentors

The Testaments was created for television by Bruce Miller, who also created The Handmaid’s Tale and serves as showrunner and executive producer. The executive producing team includes Warren Littlefield, Elisabeth Moss, Steve Stark, Shana Stein, Maya Goldsmith, John Weber, Sheila Hockin, Daniel Wilson, Fran Sears, and Mike Barker. Barker will also direct the first three episodes.

Moss remains closely connected to The Handmaid’s Tale, appearing as June Osborn and serving as an executive producer throughout the series.

Release plans and future plans

The Testes will premiere on Disney+ and Hulu on April 8th, with three episodes available at launch and weekly releases thereafter. This is a format that allows you to establish the tone of the series early on, while also giving the story room to build tension over time.
