Léa Seydoux has signed up to star alongside Mikey Madison in Charlie Pollinger’s A24’s fiercely revisionist, darkly comedic take on Edgar Allan Poe’s classic short story, The Mask of the Red Death. The decadence of the plague era, with the wealthy barricading themselves indoors, is expected to quickly catch up with the aftermath.
Julia Hammer and Eric Feig are producing for Picturestart, along with James Presson and Lucy McKendrick. A24 is distributed worldwide and Pollinger also serves as executive producer. Production is scheduled to begin in Hungary from February.
For Pollinger, the film is a sequel to his acclaimed debut, The Plague, a psychodrama thriller about a socially awkward teenager trapped in the cruel hierarchy of a water polo camp, where summer anxiety congeals into something darker. The film premiered in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section in 2025, received critical acclaim during the festival, and currently has a 99% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Who’s playing with whom (and what a mess this is)
The Hollywood Reporter reported that Madison will play twin sisters in the story of a mad prince who invites the aristocracy to his castle as a plague decimates the farmers. Things change when the long-lost twins, hidden among the underclass, enter the castle and are drawn into a decadent world of orgies, opium, power intrigue, revenge, and beheadings. Seydoux is said to be playing a sly court lady who plots her way to the top as the court’s beautiful façade begins to rot.

Seydoux is a Palme d’Or winner and five-time César Award nominee, whose recent Hollywood work includes Denis Villeneuve’s Dune Part 2. Next up, he will appear in Arthur Harari’s Unknown, Marie Kreutzer’s Gentle Monster with Catherine Deneuve, and the Zöllner Brothers. ” Alpha Gang starring Cate Blanchett and Dave Bautista.
