Update: Not unexpectedly, it has been confirmed that all EB Games New Zealand stores will close on January 31st, with the distribution center closing a month later on February 28th. This includes all 38 stores that will close in just a few weeks.
A statement obtained by RNZ said the company had received a number of offers, but “these parties offered no suggestions or solutions on how to keep the New Zealand business sustainable”.
Original story: EB Games announced today that all of its New Zealand stores and distribution centers may be closed.
EB Games currently has 38 stores in New Zealand, but has decided that its operations in New Zealand are no longer viable.
At this stage, this is just a proposal and EB Games is in the process of full consultation with all affected New Zealand team members. As of this writing, Australian stores and large Australian businesses have not been affected on a broad level.
A statement sent to all staff in New Zealand and Australia said:
“We regret to inform you that we have today begun discussions with New Zealand employees regarding the proposed closure of EB Games New Zealand operations, including all stores and distribution centres.
Our Australian operations have been very successful and are unaffected, but unfortunately we do not believe our New Zealand operations are viable.
This proposal is not final and no decision will be taken until we have completed a full consultation process in good faith with all affected New Zealand team members. Consultation will be completed with all members supported throughout this process.
Following consultation, we will provide further updates where possible. ”
