‘The Death of Robin Hood’ Trailer: Hugh Jackman Plays the Legendary Outlaw in a Gritty, Broken Role

A24 has released the official trailer for The Death of Robin Hood, and it’s a far cry from the sassy, green-tights-clad outlaw version. The film, starring Hugh Jackman, depicts Robin as an older, sadder, more violent man. Watch the trailer above, then read on for more details.

Old Robin Hood ends his legend

Wrapped in a gritty, dark and grimy palette, the trailer depicts Robin as a man exhausted by the myths spread around him, a man forced to reckon with a past shaped by crime and murder rather than noble folklore. The film’s poster carries the tagline, “He was no hero.”

Severely injured in a fierce battle, he is saved thanks to a mysterious woman played by Jodie Comer. “I have to apologize,” she told him. “You begged me to let you die.”

Robin begins to form a bond with the young girl, even making her a bow. We later learn that a “terrible thing” happened to her, and while plot details remain closely guarded, the trailer hints at a rough and bloody path toward something resembling redemption.

Sure, the comparison to Logan is understandable. Jackman plays an aging, well-worn icon paired with a young girl in a story that asks what can be salvaged at the end of a violent life.

Michael Sarnosky’s Dark Interpretation

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Jackman explained why he was drawn to this version of the character: “What I love so much about Mike’s vision of Robin Hood is that there is power in the script and an examination of how power can be used for good or bad.” He added that this Robin is “a real man in our story, with all the hurt, pain, regret, and yes, love. Mike’s story has weight. To me, it’s beautiful and human.”

Following on from The Pig and A Quiet Place, writer/director Michael Sarnosky has made it clear that this is no heroic cleaning job. He describes Robin as “this murderous outlaw who did a lot of terrible things and was kind of monstrous,” someone who lived long enough to see himself turned into folklore and now has to sit with that contradiction.

A tragic reunion with the cast

In addition to Jackman and Comer, the film also stars Bill Skarsgard as Little John. According to Sarnoski, Robin once led a group of child soldiers and mentored Skarsgård’s character in his younger years. Years later, the two meet again and now have a “completely different understanding of the lives they’ve lived” and have developed what appears to be one of the most volatile relationships in film.

The cast also includes Murray Bartlett, Noah Jupe, and Elijah Angbury. Shot on 35mm in the harsh landscape of Northern Ireland, The Death of Robin Hood takes shape as a muddy, cruel and emotionally heavy reinvention.

The film is scheduled to be released in theaters in 2026, but a release date has not yet been announced.
