Unfortunately, this isn’t an amazing new episode, but it could be the next best thing. Netflix has released the official trailer for One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5, a behind-the-scenes documentary that draws the curtain on the final chapter of a global phenomenon. The film promises a moving, craft-focused farewell as the cast and crew look back on a decade of storytelling. Watch the trailer above, then read on for more details.
A front row seat to the final season
This documentary follows the cast, creators and crew as they bring one of Netflix’s defining series to a close, providing an inside look at the years of work that went into bringing Stranger Things to its final stages.
According to the official synopsis, “Ten years after rewiring pop culture, Stranger Things returns for its final chapter. One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things Season 5 is an epic behind-the-scenes chronicle that follows the cast, creators, and crew as they bring the final season to life and bid farewell to the show that changed them forever.”
Trailers hint at the emotional weight on set, with Matt and Ross Duffer visibly tearful addressing the assembled cast and crew. For fans, it should be a real treat – focusing on the technology and the reality of ending something that spanned a decade of everyone’s lives. It’s wild to think back to how young the main cast was when it all started.
Record the run of a lifetime
Director Martina Radwan, a longtime cinematographer whose previous work includes documentaries such as Girls State and Teen Torture, Inc., calls the experience both creatively rewarding and deeply personal.
“It was such an honor and such a thrill to spend an entire year on set with them. It was pure joy to be up close and watch them bring this beloved show to life in real time,” she told Netflix site Tudum.
“I just wish I could travel back in time and document seasons 1 through 4. From the cast to my longtime collaborators, everyone welcomed me with incredible generosity and openly shared their personal and collective experiences from a decade of creative filmmaking. The Duffers are always pushing boundaries and inspiring everyone, myself included, to be better. Their process and their show represent everything I love about filmmaking.”
The Duffer Brothers talk about reviving lost behind-the-scenes storytelling
For the Duffer brothers, this project is also about preserving a style of filmmaking documentation that all but disappeared with the decline of physical media. “With the decline of physical media, that kind of behind-the-scenes storytelling has all but disappeared,” they explain.
“We wanted to bring that back, and One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things Season 5, beautifully shot and directed by Martina Radwan, is our attempt to do just that. If you love Stranger Things or are just curious about how a major Hollywood production comes to life, this is the film for you.”
The documentary will be available on Netflix on January 12th.
