Netflix has released the official trailer for The Rip, an action thriller that reunites Ben Affleck and Matt Damon in a pressure cooker scenario where protocols, loyalty, and self-control begin to crumble. Watch the trailer above, then read on for more details.
Everyday drug trafficking rewrites the stakes
“From the outside looking in, it looks simple,” Lt. Dane Dumars (Matt Damon) narrates at the beginning of the trailer. “Grab your cash, count it, turn it in. It’s different.” The difference comes down to scale. What started as a routine drug seizure quickly spirals when Miami-Dade’s tactical narcotics team discovers more than $20 million in cash. A rift so large that it changes the equation instantly.
In a conversation with Netflix’s Tudum, Damon explained why the situation instantly became stifling. “In Miami, you have to count the money on the spot so everyone knows how much money you have.” This rule locks teams in place, forcing them to endure money, temptation, and a growing belief that it belongs to those who can’t wait patiently for it to come back.
At the center of the storm are Dumars and his longtime partner, Sergeant J.D. Byrne (Affleck), but their relationship was already on the rocks before the room exploded. The trailer wastes little time in showing how quickly the tension becomes volatile. “You want to steal this steal? Say it out loud!” Byrne shouts at Dumars just before the confrontation turns physical.
The suspicions don’t end there. In one of the most revealing exchanges in the trailer, Dumars makes eye contact with Steven Yeun’s character and asks point blank, “Are you a snitch, Mike?” The silence that follows says as much as the question itself.
Damon emphasizes that it is inevitable that he will close in on the team. “They know that it’s almost certainly cartel money and it probably belongs to very dangerous people who will come and collect it,” he told Tudam. “They have time on their hands and they can’t just leave, so they have to start thinking about protecting where they are.”
The trailer escalates accordingly, with gunfights, car chases, rooftop gunfights, everything reaching a breaking point, but the tension keeps coming back to one question. It’s about how long a group can stay in line when everyone is watching everyone else.
