The official trailer for The Sheep Detectives has arrived, and it’s just as weird, fascinating, and funny as the premise promises. Watch the movie trailer above and read what’s in store for this unusual criminal organization.
A cozy farm mystery with a sharp hook
Based on the 2005 novel Three Bags Full by Leonie Swan, The Sheep Detectives stars Hugh Jackman as a quiet shepherd named George. He spends his nights reading mystery novels out loud to crowds before going to bed. When George is later found dead, the sheep quickly realize that something is very wrong.
Using everything they’ve gleaned from years of crime fiction, the herd quietly begins to piece together clues and observe the humans around them. As for potential motives, George’s lawyer, played by Emma Thompson, makes it clear in the trailer: “Actually, there’s $30 million.”
Who investigates and who cries the sheep?
Succession’s Nicholas Braun appears as a local police officer trying to investigate a crime, but as the trailer makes clear, he’s way out of his depth. The cast also includes Nicholas Galitzine, Molly Gordon, and Hong Chau.
The Voices of the Lambs is performed by a wide-ranging ensemble including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Vera Ramsay and Rhys Darby, each bringing a unique personality to the increasingly determined flock.
Directed by Kyle Balda, written by Craig Mazin
The film is directed by Kyle Balda, who makes his live-action debut after a long career in animation that included co-directing Minions, Despicable Me, and Minions: The Rise of Gru. The screenplay adaptation was written by Craig Mazin and represents a tonal shift for the Chernobyl and The Last of Us writer (though his previous credits also include comedies such as Scary Movie 3, Scary Movie 4, and The Hangover Part II).
The Sheep Detectives will be released in Australian cinemas on May 7, 2026 and in US cinemas on May 8, 2026.
