Sydney-based production company Main Course Films has signed a deal with Migu Video, a subscription streaming service owned by China Telecom, for the release of the Apple Immersive Video documentary ‘The Fine Dining Bakery’.
Shot entirely on Blackmagic Design URSA Cine Immersive and directed by Clara Chong, the doco follows Christopher Teh, the inventor of the strawberry and watermelon cake (aka ‘the world’s most Instagrammed cake’), and his new Stanmore cafe-bakery that uses native Australian ingredients.
The Apple immersive video format is designed specifically for the Apple Vision Pro augmented reality headset.
It was recently updated to the second generation model by Apple.
Post-production was completed using Apple Immersive tools in Blackmagic’s DaVinci Resolve Studio
This includes fully immersive sound design using the Apple Spatial Audio Format (ASAF) capabilities of Fairlight digital audio workstations.
Main Course Films has been actively exploring new technology over the past year and is one of the first production companies in the world to complete actual productions in formats other than Apple’s own productions.
Chong and her husband, producer and cinematographer Ben Allan, wrote the book Cinematic Immersive For Professionals, available exclusively at Apple Books, and recently held an Apple Immersive editing specialist session at Apple’s global location in California.
“We see this format as the next evolution in filmmaking, just as audiences are increasingly embracing IMAX, and Apple Immersive provides viewers with a top-quality movie experience that cannot be matched today.
There is no other technology,” Chong said.
“We were lucky to work closely with Blackmagic Design, who brought this technology to the world. The fact that they are also an Australian company is a source of pride and very useful early in the development process.”
Alan added: “This distribution agreement, and the way the tech-savvy Chinese market has already embraced Apple Immersive, shows there is a huge opportunity for Australian production companies to leverage this technology as a point of differentiation in a crowded market.”
The MIGU streaming service is available in many markets around the world, including China and Australia, and the documentary will be available on the platform starting next week.
