Disney’s Zootopia 2 has officially joined the billion dollar club. The animated sequel has now soared to over US$1.13 billion worldwide, making it the fastest Hollywood animated film to cross the US$1 billion milestone and cementing its place as one of the box office-defining blockbusters of 2025.
Zootopia 2 sets new record for animated box office revenue
After just three weeks in global release, Zootopia 2 has grossed an estimated $1.137 billion worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. This total includes approximately US$877.7 million from international markets, with China alone contributing over US$500 million, a figure that plays a decisive role in the film’s extraordinary pace.
The sequel surpassed US$1 billion worldwide in just 17 days, making it the fastest Hollywood animated film and the first production of any kind to reach this milestone. In the process, it has already exceeded the worldwide and global total of the original version of Zootopia, released in 2016.
China leads the way internationally
As The Hollywood Reporter reports, China has emerged as the driving force behind the film’s record-breaking box office performance. “Zootopia 2” is currently the second-highest grossing Hollywood film after “Avengers: Endgame,” and the first imported animated film to gross more than $500 million in that market.
Elsewhere, the film continues to record strong holds across key regions. Japan had the highest second-weekend box office ever for a Walt Disney Animation Studios release, while markets such as Australia, Germany, France, Mexico, South Korea, and Brazil all recorded relatively modest declines heading into the third weekend. The film currently ranks as the top MPA release in every important international market and is the highest-grossing Hollywood animated title worldwide in 2025 so far.
Disney Animation celebrates rare milestone
This box office success is also a notable moment for Walt Disney Animation Studios, which now boasts back-to-back $1 billion releases following last year’s Moana 2. Since 2013, the studio has released five films that have grossed more than $1 billion worldwide.
Following this milestone, Walt Disney Animation Studios Chief Creative Officer Jared Bush said in a statement:
“Everyone at Disney Animation has poured their heart, soul and passion into this film to tell a story full of joy, imagination and incredible compassion. This milestone means the world to us because, above all, it means that audiences are coming to theaters for the shared experience of seeing this film on the big screen, with people from all walks of life from all over the world together. It’s a Zootopia dream come true.”
The sequel’s success has sparked renewed interest in the series more broadly, beyond movie theaters. Viewership for Zootopia and Zootopia+ on Disney Plus has skyrocketed, with both titles now totaling over 725 million hours of viewing time worldwide on the platform.
With its theatrical release still underway and a big holiday season ahead, Zootopia 2 shows no signs of slowing down, and its place in animated box office history is already secured.
