Rob Reiner and Michelle Singer Reiner found dead in their Brentwood home
The bodies of Reiner, 78, and Michelle Singer Reiner, 68, were reportedly discovered Sunday afternoon at their home in the 200 block of South Chadbourne Avenue in Brentwood. Deadline reports that authorities were dispatched to the home after the Los Angeles Fire Department received an emergency report of an “incident” around 3:38 p.m. PT. Paramedics arrived shortly afterward, and Los Angeles Police Department was on the scene within an hour.
According to a report from TMZ, sources suggested the couple suffered stab wounds. Law enforcement has not released the identities of the victims, but authorities say the two people who died were a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman, details that match the ages of the Reiners.
Police cordoned off several blocks around the home as the investigation continued.
Family confirms death, asks for privacy
The Reiner family confirmed the news in a statement: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by their sudden loss and ask for privacy during this incredibly difficult time.”
When the news broke Sunday night, friends and colleagues were reported to be at the scene, including Billy Crystal and Larry David.
What the police have announced so far
Los Angeles Police Department Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton said at a late-night news conference that he would not confirm the identity of the victim or the cause of death, leaving it up to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office to proceed with the investigation.
“At this time, the Los Angeles Police Department is not searching for a suspect, person of interest, or any other person, and will not conduct an investigation until that investigation is completed,” Hamilton said.
Authorities previously described the situation as a “family incident.” According to reports, one of Reiners’ children, believed to be his daughter Romy Reiner, contacted emergency services, but police declined to confirm who made the call. Hamilton also declined to comment on reports naming family members in connection with the death.
An illustrious career in television and film
Reiner rose to fame as Michael “Meathead” Staevich on Norman Lear’s pioneering sitcom All in the Family, which ran for nine seasons into the 1970s. He went on to become one of Hollywood’s most versatile and influential filmmakers, directing a string of beloved classics including This Is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, and A Few Good Men, the latter of which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture.
His directorial credits also include The American President, Rumor Has It…, The Bucket List, and Flipped. His last directorial effort, the film sequel Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, was released this year.
He continued to act throughout his career, appearing in films such as Sleepless in Seattle and The Wolf of Wall Street, and on television in projects such as Curb Your Enthusiasm, 30 Rock, and most recently, The Bear.
Reiner was born in the Bronx on March 6, 1947, the son of filmmaker and comedian Carl Reiner and actress Estelle Reiner. Estelle delivered one of the film’s most famous lines in When Harry Met Sally… “I’ll have what she has.”
Tributes poured in from inside and outside Hollywood.
When this news was reported, condolences and condolences poured in from the entertainment industry and political circles.
Eric Idle wrote: “Rob Reiner was a wonderful man. I spoke to him for over an hour last night. He was always a pleasure to be around. I met him at his father’s house in 1975. He told me about filming at Stonehenge and his thoughts on the future. This is truly awful. I will miss him. A smart, talented, and very thoughtful man. Really awful.”
Paul Feig said, “Rob was a true hero of mine. A true visionary, a giant, and a lovely, wonderful person. You never know if it’s appropriate to post in such tragic circumstances, but I just want the world to know what so many of us in this industry know: Rob was the best.”
“This is a devastating loss for our city and our country,” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said in a statement, adding, “I am personally heartbroken by the tragic loss of Rob and his wife Michelle.”

What a huge loss!
Rob Reiner was one of my favorite directors. He made some of the most formative films for my generation. He came out of the shadows of the great Carl Reiner’s big comedies and went from being a TV actor to being a great director and putting out some incredible work.

Rob Reiner co-starred in one of the most influential sitcoms of all time, had an incredible track record as a director, and was one of the kindest, most thoughtful people I’ve ever met in this industry. Rest in peace Rob and Michelle. 🙏🏻 pic.twitter.com/qjNTfVfd0Y

One of my most treasured photos. Rob was my true hero. He is truly a visionary, a giant, and a lovely, lovely person. No one knows if it’s appropriate to post during such a tragic event. But I just want the world to know something that many of us in this industry know. Rob was great. 💔 pic.twitter.com/oDn1FW1vqb
