Prime Video has released the official trailer for Season 2 of The Night Manager, and it’s clear that Tom Hiddleston’s Jonathan Pine can’t find peace in his life no matter how hard he tries. Nearly a decade after the series first found itself stuck in the gray area between heroes and ghosts, the former secret agent and night manager of a luxury hotel is back with a new name and a new plot. Watch the trailer above and read on to find out.
Jonathan Pine is brought out of the shadows again.
In Season 2, Pine begins life as Alex Goodwin. A low-ranking MI6 official has the most secure-looking assignment yet: a sleepy surveillance unit in London. It’s the kind of job you take on when you’re trying to disappear from public view. A chance sighting of a familiar mercenary from Richard Roper’s former orbit draws Pine back into the world he thought he could escape. Then, he gets involved in a violent conflict with a new player, Colombian businessman Teddy dos Santos (Diego Calva).
The deeper the pines go, the less this feels like a single-target mission. Roxana Bolaños (Camila Morrone) is a reluctant fixer who helps Pine slip into Teddy’s arms operation in Colombia. And of course, the closer you get to the truth, the harder it becomes to tell who is taking advantage of whom.
Olivia Colman returns as spymaster Angela Barr, once again guiding Pine toward the line of fire with the cool authority that gives the director a sense of danger. The new season also adds Indira Varma, Paul Chahidi and Hayley Squires, while Alistair Petrie, Douglas Hodge, Michael Nardone and Noah Jupe reprise their roles from the original.
Hiddleston’s “Unfinished Business”
Speaking to the BBC about his return, Hiddleston said: “I think he felt he had unfinished business in the role. Making the first series felt incredibly fulfilling and very exciting. It was about the world as we see it, but it was also about a fascinating and mysterious character with a very deep and complex inner life.” He also points out what draws him back to the subject: “John le Carré is a great expert at combining political reality and personal complexity into a great spy story with a sense of thrill and mystery.”
He digs deeper into Pine’s identity (or lack thereof), adding, “Le Carre once thought, ‘There is no center in man.’ Where is Jonathan Pine’s center? I believe so, but how are the different aspects of him expressed through these different personas? Each persona expresses different aspects of Pine’s inner life.” And for anyone wondering if this is just nostalgic rap, Hiddleston insists it’s not. “It’s very exciting to have reached this crossroads of creating something new…something completely fresh and original.”
Meanwhile, Coleman summed up the time jump in the best Angela Barr way possible, saying, “It was great to be back at Angela Barr after nine years. I know it’s been nine years because I was very pregnant last round, but that baby is now nine years old. It was really great to come back and see my old team.”
Season 2 is created and executive produced by David Farr, based on the character created by John le Carré, and directed entirely by George Banks-Davies (Chaos, I Hate Susie).
