Apple TV has officially ordered a third season of Platonic, with Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne still on board for midlife mishaps, emotional damage control, and highly questionable decision-making. The renewal follows the Season 2 finale, which aired on October 1st, and concluded its second chapter with a 100% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes (Season 1 held a 93%).
Apple embroiled in yet another midlife turmoil
Throughout its first two seasons, Platonic follows former best friends Will (Rogen) and Sylvia (Byrne) who reunite in their 40s and quickly dispel any illusions that adulthood equals stability. Season 2 takes it even further, with work issues, a wedding, and a partner in crisis all competing for space, as the two try, often unsuccessfully, to be each other’s emotional safety net. As the season logline states, they try their best to be each other’s rock, but sometimes rocks can break things.
The ensemble surrounding them has become even richer. Luke MacFarlane plays Sylvia’s husband Charlie. Charlie gradually finds comfort in his intense and often chaotic friendship with his wife, Will. Their home life is completed by their three children, played by Sophie Leonard, Max Malenko, and Sophie Kopera, and regular appearances by Tre Hale, Andrew Lopez, and Carla Gallo. Season 2 also added new complications to Will’s love life, with Emily Kimball and Rachel Rosenbloom appearing as his latest love interests, and a string of guest stars including Aidy Bryant, Kyle Mooney, Beck Bennett, Milo Manheim, and Byrne’s real-life partner Bobby Cannavale.
Co-creators Nicholas Stoller and Francesca Delbanco expressed their enthusiasm for continuing the project, saying, “We couldn’t be more excited to return to the platonic world with our wonderful partners Rose and Seth, Sony and Apple.”
Matt Charnis, head of programming at Apple, gave a nod to the central duo’s appeal, calling the series, “Platonic proves that there is no duo that makes midlife crisis laugh as much as Seth and Rose.” He added, “Nick and Francesca have achieved the rare feat of taking the show to the next level in Season 2, and we can’t wait to see what they cook up in Season 3, along with our partners at Sony.”
Rogen and Byrne remain in Apple’s comedy family
Platonic is produced by Sony Pictures Television, with Stoller and Delbanco serving as executive producers along with Connor Welch, and Point Gray Pictures’ Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver serving as executive producers. This renewal keeps Rogen and Byrne firmly in Apple’s comedy orbit. In addition to “Platonic,” Rogen also stars in Apple TV’s hit series “The Studio,” which recently earned 23 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series, and took home acting, writing, and directing trophies (shared with longtime collaborator Evan Goldberg). Meanwhile, Byrne also headlines Apple’s dark comedy Physical.
Apple has yet to tease plot details for Season 3, but given the circumstances in which Will and Sylvia left in Season 2, it’s safe to say we can expect more midlife disasters, social self-destruction, and moments of discomfort as they grow older, not necessarily wiser, and clinging to friendships that can either save or destroy them. For now, fans can at least take comfort in knowing that this particular friendship won’t cause any problems anytime soon.
Here are some behind-the-scenes gaffes from Season 2.
