Netflix miniseries Apple Cider Vinegar has secured a whopping 20 nominations for the 2026 AACTA Awards, while Danny and Michael Phillipou’s sophomore feature Bring Her Back is the frontrunner in film with 16 nods.
AACTA announced the majority of nominees today ahead of February’s ceremonies on the Gold Coast, with the International Award and VFX nominations to be unveiled later this month. Round two voting, to determine the winners, is open now.
Other strong hopefuls in television include The Newsreader (12 nominations) and Mystery Road Origin (11 nominations), each now some of the most consistently awarded Australian dramas of the past decade with 56 and 43 total nominations respectively. Both will contend Best Drama with Black Snow Jack of Clubs, The Family Next Door and The Twelve: Cape Rock Killer. Amazon premium drama The Narrow Road to the Deep North is also a leader in the TV field, with 12 nominations.
In film, The Correspondent has secured 14 nods, while both Together and Kangaroo, the year’s highest grosser, are up for eight gongs.
The ABC is the most nominated broadcaster or streaming platform, recognised 68 times, more than doubling the next most nominated, Netflix, which earned 26 nods.
Apple Cider Vinegar will square off for the Best Miniseries prize alongside Invisible Boys, Mix Tape, The Last Anniversary, The Narrow Road to the Deep North and The Survivors. Its dominance can be squarely seen in the acting categories, with Best Lead Actress nominations for both Alycia Debnam-Carey and Kaitlyn Dever, and six supporting acting nominations for Essie Davis, Aisha Dee, Susie Porter, Mark Coles Smith, Matt Nable and Ashley Zukerman.
Dee is also up for Lead Actress for Watching You, while Mark Coles Smith will contend the Lead Actor prize for Mystery Road Origin. Other double nominees include Daniel Henshall, up for both The Family Next Door and The Newsreader.
‘Bring Her Back’.
In Best Film race includes Bring Her Back, The Correspondent, Lesbian Space Princess, The Surfer and The Travellers. Screenplay and direction categories largely follow the same field. The Best Screenplay nominees including Bring Her Back, Lesbian Space Princess, The Correspondent, Inside and Together, while the Best Direction lineup features Bring Her Back, The Correspondent, Lesbian Space Princess, Kangaroo and The Travellers.
In an AACTA first, Lesbian Space Princess will not only contend the Best Film prize but Best Indie Film award, nominated with Carmen & Bolude, Fwends, It Will Find You, Magic Beach and With or Without You.
The Best Actress race includes a first-time nomination for Kangaroo newcomer Lily Whiteley, who up against Sally Hawkins for Bring Her Back, Alison Brie for Together, Daisy Ridley for We Bury the Dead and Susie Porter for The Travellers.
Heavyweights of the Australian industry will vie for Best Lead Actor, including Bryan Brown for The Travellers, Ryan Corr for Kangaroo, Jai Courtney for Dangerous Animals, Guy Pearce for Inside, Richard Roxburgh for The Correspondent and David Wenham for Spit.
Best Documentary will put Ellis Park; Journey Home, David Gulpilil; But Also John Clarke; Songs Inside; Unbreakable – The Jelena Dokic Story and Yurlu | Country head to head.
The most nominated person this year is producer Kevin Whyte of Guesswork Television, nominated for Best Comedy Entertainment Program for both The Weekly With Charlie Pickering and Hard Quiz, as well as Best Children’s Program for Hard Quiz Kids and Best Stand-Up Special for Celia Pacquola: I’m As Surprised As You Are and Geraldine Hickey: Don’t Tease Me About My Gloves
Composer Cornel Wilczek is right behind with, up twice for Original Score in film (Bring Her Back, Together) and television (Apple Cider Vinegar, The Survivors), while Jemma Burns secured three nominations in Best Soundtrack (Apple Cider Vinegar, Kangaroo, Mystery Road: Origin), following her dual recognition in the same category last year.
“This year’s nominations showcase the remarkable creativity and craft behind Australian screen storytelling. It’s encouraging to see such a diverse mix of new voices, returning favourites and world-class productions recognised across film, television, documentary and online content,” said AACTA CEO Damian Trewhella.
The AACTA Audience Choice Awards will also return later this month with publicly voted awards including Favourite Australian Digital Creator, Favourite Film, TV Show, and Actors. This year, AACTA will introduce new categories, Favourite Australian Podcast and Favourite Australian Music Video. Voting for these Awards will happen in January.
The 2026 AACTA Awards Ceremony, to be held at HOTA on the Gold Coast, will screen on Channel 10 at 7.30pm AEDT, Friday February 6. A special extended AACTA Awards broadcast, including all awards from the ceremony, will be available from 7:30pm on Saturday February7 on Binge/Foxtel.
