‘Welcome to Derry’ Episode 6 Trailer + Behind the Scenes, Watch Episode 5’s Big Reveal

HBO has released the trailer for episode 6 of It: Welcome to Derry. After Episode 5’s explosive Pennywise reveal, things in Derry get darker, stranger, and far more dangerous. The next chapter in Stephen King’s original series, titled “In the Name of the Father,” looks poised to delve deeper into the town’s history, the children’s growing fears, and Dick Halloran’s psychological unraveling. Watch the trailer above, read more, and check out a behind-the-scenes look at episode 5.

Episode 6 Trailer: Flashbacks, Rising Danger, and the Black Spot

Episode 5 provided one of the show’s biggest moments to date. Bill Skarsgård has returned to his terrifying form as Pennywise after being teased for seasons. Episode 6 picks up right after that, and the new trailer is packed with plenty for fans to analyze.

Among the standout glimpses are chilling black-and-white flashbacks featuring Bobby (Robert “Bob” Gray), the man from whom the creature stole its identity after death. Dick Halloran struggles to stay in control after mentally letting It out. Lily and her friends grab the stone pillar that saved their lives in episode 5. The search for Hank Grogan is intensifying, with Chief Clint Bowers claiming he knows exactly where he is hiding. Then came shots of the Black Spot, a location that King’s fans know is tied to a tragic history.

Behind the scenes: Pennywise’s preparation for big profits

HBO also released a behind-the-scenes look at episode 5, digging into key character turns, the giant sewer set, and, of course, the reveal of Pennywise. That big reveal sequence hinged on the episode’s devastating turn of events. Matti is back… only it’s not Matti at all.

The episode’s director, Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour Jr., describes the delicate balance they aimed for: “For me, and for Andy and the writers, at no point in the first half of the episode did we want the audience to believe that this was representation.”

Andy Muschietti details the transformation itself, explaining Matty’s decision to transform into Pennywise, something audiences have never seen before. “Then we got the idea to have Matty circling around Paul and singing this song. All of a sudden, something grows out of the back of his head. We realize that the hole is a mouth full of teeth. The creature on his back begins to take over, and we realize that the creature is none other than Pennywise.”

Muschietti added that it was important to hold back on Pennywise to maintain the show’s fear. “I didn’t want to show Pennywise in Episode 1 or Episode 2 or even Episode 3 or 4. I wanted to create that tension and create that buildup. That was something very special to me.”

In Entertainment Weekly’s coverage of the episode, the team explains the broader philosophy behind keeping Pennywise around until mid-season. “Pennywise is supposed to look a little bit like the shark from ‘Jaws,'” Barbara Muschietti said. “We really want to be strategic. For both films, it was very important to us to keep the mystery and fear of this character alive. We found that familiarity is its enemy. So it was important to us to delay the joy and fear as much as possible. ” Andy Muschietti echoed that idea, calling it “a game of anticipation” to get people into a state of, “I have to see the clown! Where is it?!” and added, “That’s what we wanted as an audience: a little bit of a slow burn.”

Co-showrunner Jason Fuchs delves into how the series format makes a difference to the characters and the creatures behind them. “There’s very little room in the movies to see any other representation of the creature than Pennywise,” he says. “Since you’re on TV…you can watch the full episode where we can explore other ways to torment these kids.”

Fans were already coming to the show waiting for Skarsgård’s return, and he said the creative team went “back and forth” about when to finally pull the trigger, adding, “‘It “We always knew that this character wasn’t going to be front and center in the first scene of the pilot, as 2017 opens with the introduction of Georgie and Pennywise. But a big part of the creative process was, ‘When do we introduce this character within the context of this story?’ At the end of the day, it was the story and the role of the characters that determined it. ”

Looking ahead, Fuchs teased that Skarsgård’s turn in the series will “go somewhere unexpected,” adding that Skarsgård “has an opportunity with this character that wasn’t presented in the story of the movie. Seeing Pennywise is going to be really, hopefully thrilling, but also seeing Bill do things with this character that we haven’t seen before.”
