James returns to the fog in ‘Return to Silent Hill’ trailer
Gunns’ new horror film centers on James (Jeremy Irvin, Outlander: Blood of My Blood), a man still reeling from the loss of his wife Mary (Hannah Emily Anderson, Smoke). He receives a letter that is not supposed to exist. It seems to be a message from her calling him back to Silent Hill. Drawn to a town now more decaying than a haven, James finds himself wandering through fog-shrouded streets, decaying interiors, and realities that don’t quite match.
The trailer showcases a familiar and reimagined version of Silent Hill. Maria’s line about the city becoming “sick” hints at a twist in its ambiguous origins that connects the city’s decay more directly to disease and decline. It’s the kind of tweak that could sharpen how James’ trauma and Mary’s suffering bleed into the town’s mythology, while also allowing the otherworld to do what it does best: chew up anyone unlucky enough to wander in.
Guns seem to be leaning hard into iconic imagery. Fans will be watching for visual nods to some of the game’s most memorable moments, such as James’ reflex-heavy bathroom sequence and encounters with other lost souls like the knife-clutching Angela, along with a fresh spin clearly drawn from both the original game and Bloober Team’s recent remake. And yes, the big guys are here. Robert Strange appears as the Red Pyramid (also known as Pyramid Head), striding through the darkness wearing a metal helmet and walking punishment. There have been some tweaks to the lore, but the trailer touts the film as trying to keep pace with the original. Let’s see if it’s the faithful take longtime fans have been waiting for.
Cast and composer Akira Yamaoka return to film
In addition to Irvine and Anderson, the cast includes Evie Templeton (Wednesday) as Laura, who voiced the character and provided performance capture in the 2024 game remake, making it a neat piece of continuity for Silent Hill fanatics, but also Pierce Egan as Eddie Dombrowski.
If there’s one thing that can soothe even the most skeptical fans, it’s the music. Composer Akira Yamaoka, who helped define the game’s sound and atmosphere, returns to the score. Gans has made it clear that he wouldn’t have made this film without Yamaoka’s involvement, and between that and agreeing with PT as a tonal reference point, there’s a sense that he understands how important audio and atmosphere are here.
