Pixar has released the official teaser trailer for “Toy Story 5” featuring Woody, Buzz and friends. They return for another adventure, facing a whole new threat to their playtime: smart technology. Watch the teaser above and read important details below.
Set to INXS’ 1987 classic “Never Tear Us Apart,” the film’s 49-second first look suggests that “the days of toys are over.” It’s the pointed hook of a series that began in 1995 as Pixar’s Tech Revolution, and now looks at gadgets replacing traditional toys.
The big new arrival is the Lilypad, a children’s tablet voiced by Greta Lee (Past Lives, Tron: Ares), portrayed as a sophisticated, always-on device that threatens to make the old gang obsolete. Co-directors Andrew Stanton (WALL-E, Finding Nemo) and McKenna Harris promised a “playful, adversarial atmosphere” as the toys take on this latest rival.
The main cast will return. Tom Hanks will once again voice Woody, Tim Allen will return as Buzz Lightyear, Joan Cusack will return as Jesse, and Tony Hale will reprise his role as Forky from Toy Story 4. Following the passing of Carl Weathers, Ernie Hudson takes over the role of Combat Carl.
“This has been a hilarious and moving journey exploring how our favorite legacy toy teams respond to today’s world of technology, and we’re thrilled to get this first glimpse,” Stanton and Harris said in a statement. “It was incredible how the incredibly talented Greta Lee brought Lilypad to life, balancing the playfully adversarial tone with humor and heart.”
Lilypad isn’t the only piece of technology for kids. Another new character, Smarty Pants, is a potty training assistant created to assist with potty training and is voiced by Conan O’Brien. It’s just the kind of smart gadget so special that Woody and his friends wonder where they fit into a playroom increasingly run by screens.
When it comes to that classic track used in the teaser, the band is embracing the crossover. “‘Never Tear Us Apart’ has always held a special place in our hearts,” INXS told Rolling Stone AU/NZ. “Seeing that in the Toy Story universe is incredibly moving for all of us.”
Toy Story 5 will be released in Australian cinemas on June 18, 2026, and in US cinemas on June 19, 2026.
