Monster Pictures has released the trailer for the new Australian horror film Diabolic. Watch the trailer above and read important details below.
story
Elise, 17, undergoes a “baptism for the dead” in the fundamentalist Latter-day Saint (FLDS) community. When the name “Lalou” is invoked, some malicious reaction occurs and Elise is excommunicated.
Ten years later, a power outage and escalating self-harm forces her to confront her past. She returns to Haventon, an abandoned FLDS town in Utah, with her partner Adam and friend Gwen. There, a hallucinogenic healing ritual appears to help, only for the bloody form of LaRue, a 19th century witch erased from Mormon history, to reappear. As her memories come back, Elise takes complete control and her intense calculations accelerate.
Cast and festival management
Elizabeth Cullen (Elvis, The Last Anniversary) plays Elise, John Kim (The Librarians, The Little Things) plays her husband Adam, and Mia Challis (Outer Banks) plays her best friend Gwen.
The film premiered at the Adelaide Film Festival and was screened at Monster Fest in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth, where it won the award for Best Australian Feature Film.
Origin and influence
The screenplay weaves FLDS practices and lore into a story of possession and witchcraft developed after director Daniel J.
Phillips said in a director’s statement: “‘Diabolic’ combines classic supernatural horror staples with modern characters and challenges, and incorporates a unique mythology never seen before…It’s based on a true story, which makes it all the scarier.”
He adds, “The film’s visuals are reminiscent of modern horror blockbusters like The Conjuring and The Ring, in which a small group of people are forced to confront supernatural beings from which there is no escape.”
release date
Diabolique will be released across Australia (in these participating cinemas) through Monster Pictures on November 20th.
