Watch the first five minutes of ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 — Young Will confronts Vecna in the finale’s opening

Netflix has released the first five minutes of Season 5 of Stranger Things. It’s a spine-tingling return to where it all began. A sneak peek of the show’s final season transports viewers directly to Hawkins in 1983, setting the tone for a nostalgic yet nightmarish Endgame. Watch the clip above and read the important details below.

Cold open back in 1983

The first five minutes of the premiere, from an episode titled “The Crawl,” draw us into an Upside Down nightmare. We’re back to Hawkins in 1983 at the beginning. Will Byers is alone, terrified and hiding in a makeshift fort. Then the telltale crack of something terrible broke the silence. The Demogorgon approaches and, after a frantic rummage through the forest, Will is dragged into Vecna’s lair. It’s a dilapidated, red-lit room where the big villain awaits.

It’s unsettling to see the Demogorgon exhibit intelligence while taking orders – a cold hint of the hierarchy under Vecna’s control. And poor Will put up a brave little fight, even managing to fire a desperate shot at the creature.

“We can finally begin,” Vecna says, watching over Will, who is bound unconscious by vines. He then snaked the thick vine towards Will’s mouth and watched the liquid pump into his body, creating a connection between them before promising, “You and me, we’re going to do something very beautiful together.”

This opening also sharpens the sense that Vecna has been playing the game the longest, raising the disturbing thought that Will’s “rescue” by Joyce and Hopper in season 1, episode 8, “The Upside Down” played out exactly as he intended.

Hawkins State: Quarantine, cameras, no time to breathe.

Once that flashback wears off, the season shifts back to 1987 Hawkins, with the town under military quarantine. Gone is the sense of “normal life” that the series portrayed at the beginning of past seasons. Co-creator Ross Duffer told Netflix’s Chewdom: “Usually we set up their daily lives and school lives and then introduce the supernatural elements. But in this case, this season has been galloping from the get-go.”

Co-creator Matt Duffer added, “Nothing is normal in Hawkins anymore… Their movements are restricted and there are Big Brother cameras everywhere. So not only are they active, but their everyday, normal lives are anything but normal.”

The Duffer family has long kept documents related to the series’ mythology, and the final season is set to cash in on some of its biggest secrets. Ross Duffer explained: “We’ve replaced the last remaining questions that can be answered in that document with some questions that will reveal some big facts in Season 5. And that’s going to have a big impact on what Season 5 is about.”

release date

Netflix will release the final season of Stranger Things in three parts. Four episodes on November 26th, three episodes on Christmas Day, and a finale on New Year’s Eve.
