‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 official trailer released: Hawkins goes into lockdown and the final battle with Vecna begins

Netflix has released the full-length official trailer for Stranger Things season 5 (final chapter), offering an exciting and dramatic taste of Endgame. Watch the trailer above. Key details and context are listed below.

The year is autumn 1987. Hawkins was wounded, fenced in, and crawling under guard. Vecna slips through the cracks, and the crew is forced to work in the shadows as authorities tighten control and increase pressure on Eleven. As the anniversary of Will’s disappearance approaches, the town’s anxiety is palpable. The only way forward is for everyone, every last party member, to work together in one final push to track down Vecna and close the door to the Upside Down forever.

Go straight to the end game

As Ross Duffer told Netflix site Tudum, “I think what’s unique about this season is that it starts out a little bit chaotic, because the heroes ultimately lost at the end of Season 4…This season has been full steam ahead from the beginning.” Matt Duffer supported the change, saying that the gang “isn’t experiencing normal life. Nothing is normal in Hawkins anymore.”

Big spectacle, same heartbeat

Shawn Levy, who will direct two episodes this season, is assembling the balance that the trailer suggests. “The action is next level, the visual effects are next level, but I also love that the emotional core remains the same… It’s always rooted in these characters that we love.”

You can feel it in the cuts: the army on a street corner, the cracks running through Hawkins, the quick beat of humans refusing to turn chaos into noise. Layered on top of that is Queen’s 1986 ballad “Who Wants to Live Forever” (from Queen’s 12th studio album, A Kind of Magic), a needle drop that quietly points to a potential breakup without overtly declaring doom, or at least highlighting the emotional limits they’re entering.

where the party stands

Eleven is sharpened into protector mode. As Millie Bobby Brown puts it, “Eleven is in training mode. She’s in warrior state… All she’s thinking about is protecting her friends.” The rest of the staff is carrying the weight of last season’s losses. Gaten Matarazzo said, “Dustin is in a bit of a funk,” and Caleb McLaughlin said, “The betting is right where we left off…Everyone’s nervous and we’re just trying to stay hopeful.” Noah Schnapp emphasized pace, saying, “We were able to get off to a quick start this season.” Sadie Sink reminded him that Max is getting better — “not what he used to be” — but that there are “little rays of hope.” And Finn Wolfhard said, “Mike has returned to leadership mode,” and is helping to steer the search for Vecna.

cast roll call

Returning core and recent players: Winona Ryder (Joyce), David Harbor (Hopper), Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven), Finn Wolfhard (Mike), Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin), Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas), Noah Schnapp (Will), Sadie Sink (Max), Natalia Dyer (Nancy), Charlie Heaton (Jonathan), Joe Keery.
