Disney+ has locked Arconia’s masterpiece into another incident. “Only Murders in the Building” has been officially renewed for a 10-episode sixth season. There are also new locales. The trio swaps New York and London to investigate “London’s latest mystery.” The timing is also perfect. The season 5 finale has just arrived on Disney+, so there’s no time for your corkboard pins to cool down.
This is the show’s first overseas detour, and it’s a natural fit for a series that thrives on cozy crime mechanics and well-placed chaos. Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez will continue to star, with co-creators and writers Steve Martin and Jon Hoffman helming the series.
Season 5’s ensemble continued to be the stars. Meryl Streep and Davine Joy Randolph return, and Richard Kind, Nathan Lane, Bobby Cannavale, Renée Zellweger, Logan Lerman, Christoph Waltz, Tea Leoni, Keegan-Michael Key, Beanie Feldstein, Dianne Wiest, and Jermaine Fowler co-star alongside Michael Cyril Clayton.
Spoiler alert: Season 5 ending and what’s next
The final outcome of the Arconia incident
Multiple players end the season in cuffs, including Mayor Beau Tillman (Keegan-Michael Key), Camilla White (Renee Zellweger), Jay Plugg (Logan Lerman), and Bash Steed (Christoph Waltz). The trio shut down Tillman and White’s casino project. Tillman kills Lester to cover up the plan and his affair with Nicky Casimerio’s (Bobby Cannavale) wife Sofia (Tea Leoni).
In the chaos, Nicky falls on Lester, who is holding a kitchen knife, and dies, but White, Plug, and Steed hide his body in Steed’s cryogenic room, where Plug then moves it to a dry cleaners. A camera activated by a bird whistle captured the fatal collision between Tillman and Lester at the fountain.
The London axis and the role of Cinda
As one mystery closes, another opens. Listening to Cinda Canning’s (Tina Fey) latest podcast, the trio learns that she is in London investigating a case involving a “redheaded woman” who is said to be “unjustly accused of murdering a royal descendant.” Shortly after, that woman collapses at the gates of Arconia, and it turns out to be Cinda herself, neatly setting up the British storyline for season six.
Showrunner and executive producer Jon Hoffman said in an interview with TheWrap that the writers’ room is “already open” for the new season and the team is “pretty well advanced,” calling the London axis “a big jolt of energy” that puts the trio in a “completely different environment” while maintaining the show’s “core heart and beat and beat.” He further added, “It felt really right and exciting to go to the place where the cozy murder mystery was invented and see a bit of a culture clash.”
What will change next season?
Hoffman was clear about the creative reset, saying, “I will say it’s not going to be structured like Season 4. We’re heading to our homeland to find out what the podcasting mother of our trio was doing and what’s going on there.” After a year in which he was “focused on Arconia,” he said, “It felt like a moment to say, let’s see what happens when they get here.”
About the choice of the murderer and Cinda’s cover-up
Reflecting on the whodunnit calculation, Hoffman said, “We always talk about alternatives first… but in this case, we got to the mayor pretty quickly.” He also admitted that he was “very focused on[hiding Tina’s identity]” and said of Faye’s reaction to being a victim of the new season: “I’m so excited. I don’t see why I can’t tell my daughters.”
