Settlers, start stocking up on sheep: Netflix has signed a wide-ranging deal for worldwide exclusive rights to Catan, paving the way for scripted and unscripted projects including live-action, animation, and even video games.
It’s not a one-time thing. This is the basis of a screen universe built on deals, grudges and its companions who always hoard ore.
what is being done
The agreement has been signed with tabletop powerhouse Asmodee (home of Ticket to Ride, 7 Wonders and Exploding Kitten). The assignment covers series and features that follow the reality/competition concept and marks the first time Catan has been adapted for the screen after three decades of tabletop diplomacy, resource scarcity, and opportunistic heists.
Who is building the settlement?
Producers include Darren Kaiman (Asmodee), Pete Fenlon (Catan Studio), Klaus Teuber’s sons Guido and Benjamin Teuber, and Roy Lee (Vertigo Entertainment).
what they are saying
Ginny Howe, Head of Netflix Scripted Series (US and Canada): “Anyone who has played Catan knows that the intense strategy and negotiation at the heart of the game offers endless opportunities for serious drama. We knew closing this deal would be as game-changing as striking a proper settlement, so we pooled our resources across series, features, animation, and games and worked together to bring Asmodee to Netflix. We decided to show the full power of the hardcore “Settlers” and new fans will finally learn how important the sheep trade is. โ
Thomas Kegler, CEO of Asmodee: “Catan has been enjoyed by millions since its inception, and for many it continues to be the gateway to modern board gaming. We’re thrilled to see the game expand to a wider audience discovering the richness of its world. We’re also excited for the future of the brand…This is a great way for board games to become truly pop. It’s a testament to the fact that it’s part of the culture and a popular form of entertainment in every household, and we’re excited about the continued relationship between Asmodee and Netflix.”
Benjamin Teuber and Guido Teuber, co-CEOs of Catan GmbH: “Thirty years ago, when our father Klaus Teuber first introduced us to Catan, he envisioned an ambitious world where people would come together to trade, build, and settle together at the table and beyond. This collaboration with Netflix marks an exciting new chapter in that journey.”
From tabletop to tent poles
First published in 1995, Settlers of Catan has sold more than 45 million copies and been translated into more than 40 languages. This is a true introductory game that taught generations the value of timely exchanges of wheat and wood.
For Netflix, this is the latest move in its growing game-to-screen efforts, which include Arcane, Castlevania, Exploding Kittens, the upcoming Assassin’s Creed series, the Monopoly reality competition, and the Gears of War movie. If Catan clicks, expect a long road and many settlements.
